In front of 6,000 fans at Chicago’s UIC Pavillion, #1 Simeon Wolverines defeated #2 Whitney Young HS Dolphins 62-55 to move to 8-0 on the season. Missing some key players, Young started 3 sophomores but their size and length still presented challenges to Simeon. The NBA MVP and Bulls star Derrick Rose sported his Simeon letterman’s jacket in the crowd. Chicagoan Anthony Davis (Kentucky freshman) signed autographs for fans. Head coaches John Calipari (Kentucky), Rick Pitino (Louisville) and Oliver Purnell (DePaul) were all in attendance, along with a dozen or so college assistant coaches.
6’11 sophomore Jahlil Okafor (Whitney Young) led all scorers with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 3 blocks. Down the stretch, 6’7 senior Steve Taylor (Marquette) and athletic 6’3 junior 2-guard Kendrick Nunn (19pts) made big plays to lead Simeon. 6’8 Jabari Parker finished with 15 points, 9 rebounds and 5 blocks. While it wasn’t always pretty, this matchup showcased Chicago’s 2 most talented teams and the atmosphere lived up to the hype. They could meet next in the city playoffs and again in a 4A Sectional in the state tournament.
