1989 the number another summer (get down) Sound of the funky drummer. That’s the voices of Chuck D & Flavor Flav (long before VH1) blasting on Sony walkmans in 1989. The video above is the sights and sounds of MVP Magic Johnson tearing apart Lever, English & Adams of the Denver Nuggets on November 17th of 1989.
Magic had 24 points 8 rebounds 6 steals and a career high 24 assists in a 14 point victory. Magic’s 24 assists were 9 more than the entire Nuggets team and we are talking about a Doug Moe Denver team that averages 115 points a game.
Magic would end up tying his assist record the next season and the 24 assist mark has been passed 15 times in NBA history most recently by Jason Kidd in 1996 with 25. Scott Skiles has the assist record with 30 and John Stockston has passed 24 assist 4 times in his career.
AT 22.3ppg, 1989 was also one of Magic’s higher scoring years of his career. Here’s a couple of his higher scoring gems from the season
