Do you know what you were doing when you heard the news? For me, I was drinking a McDonalds sugar-free Iced Coffee in my car on Monday, 8:39 am, July the 4th of 2016 when I saw The Players’ Tribune’s tweet with a black and white photo of Kevin Durant and the words “My Next Chapter” and “Kevin Durant makes his free agency announcement.” My eyes got big, I clicked on the link to their website and…..the site wouldn’t freaking load! I almost spit out my Iced Coffee to curse at the site and then I looked at my main feed and saw the answer followed by lots of tweets with the words “champion” and “coward.”
The decision from the MVP of 3 seasons ago to join the MVP of the past 2 seasons and the Warriors – the team with the best regular season record in the NBA history; the team that beat him and the Thunder in the WCF; the team that choked in the NBA Finals – with a 2 year deal at $54,3 million, caused more noise and even fires (stop the jersey burning people) than any firework show on this July the 4th.
The debated decision also generated some of the best and funniest tweets, edited videos and memes I’ve seen since probably the Cavs beating the Warriors in GM7 of the NBA Finals.
