John Amaechi was a “fat nerdy kid” didn’t play basketball until he was 17 years old.  He was signed undrafted by the Cavs in 1995 but did not make his NBA debut until 1999.  After his successful first season in the NBA he had the opportunity to sign with the Lakers in 2000, win some championships and get paid $11.3 million dollars.  He rejected it to stay with the Orlando Magic for $600,000 a year.

He’s now more known for being the first NBA player to announce that he was gay than anything he did during his NBA career but he worked as hard as anybody and paid the fee to get to the league.

Here’s a short motivational video by HoopsFix about John’s journey.
