It used to be historic moments when a female basketball player dunked in a game but now Brittney Griner is making it a daily routine to appear on Sportscenter with a 1 or 2 hand dunk.
A lot of people might think women dunking started with Griner or Candace Parker or for the slightly older people Lisa Leslie but it actually started back in 1984 when West Virginia’s 6’7 junior center Georgeann Wells dunked in a college game. There was only about 100 people in the crowd to witness it but lucky for us one of them had a video camera and recorded it so we do have proof.
Unfortunately, we would have to wait 10 years for another dunk and 16 years for more video proof. In 1994, UNC’s Charlotte Smith put down an uncontested dunk with 17 seconds left in a game against North Carolina A&T but it wasn’t until 2000 when Michelle Snow dunked in a college game that we had footage to show on SportsCenter.
