According to Mark Jackson, D’Angelo “Ice In his Veins” Russell said, “this is my house” after getting fouled by KJ McDaniels and knocking down a 3 to give the Lakers a 3 point lead midway through the first quarter against the Rockets. What he really said, over and over again, was, “this is my shit!”
You can argue that it wasn’t a foul but there’s no excuse for the other 11 points Russell scored in the opening period. He finished the game with 20 points and 4 triples.
“I talked to Kobe yesterday, just letting him know I was ready,” Russell told ESPN. “He told me I looked ready. Coming from him that was great to hear going into opening night.”
His young teammates looked ready too. Julius Randle had 18 points, 7 rebounds and a team-high 6 assists; Jordan Clarkson came off the bench and scored a team-high 25 points on 8 of 12 shooting; rookie Brandon Ingram connected on 4 of 6 shots for 9 points.
