During the first quarter of the Mavs/Raptors game with Dallas leading by 11, Vince Carter showed some Vintage Vinsanity to the Raptors fans, that used to make him the leading All-Star vote getter year after year, when he drove and dunked on DeMar DeRozan. When the buzzer for the first quarter buzzed the Mavs were up 34-15 but then the changing of the guards happened in Toronto.
The Raptors outscored the Mavs 31-17 in the 2nd quarter and DeMar DeRozan put on another performance that showed why he should be at All-Star weekend – and not for the Dunk Contest. The high flying All-Star game worthy DeRozan scored a career high 40 points, on 15 of 22 shooting, as the Raptors overcame their largest deficit (21) of the season.
“He’s a very good player, very athletic,” Carter said of DeMar. “I think he’s really learning how to play under control now. When you have athleticism like that sometimes you just go, you just play and let your athleticism take over. He’s now slowing down and everything else is developing and it’s just making him a tough player.”
Vince Carter had 8 points in 22 minutes in front of the fans that used to so proudly cheer for him and I think it’s about time for those fans to start showing that type of support for DeRozan. Granted his dunks and highlights aren’t as impressive as a young Vince (who is?) but DeRozan is showing this season that he’s the next best thing.
DeRozan’s previous career high was 37 which DeMar has set 3 times.
