When Derrick Rose first said the Knicks were a “Super Team” we just laughed and moved on. Then when he went to Korea earlier this month and explained to the media why he still believes the Knicks are a “Super Team,” we stopped laughing and realized Rose just might be serious and possibly a little delusional – confidence is one thing, being delusional is another.
On Tuesday, Nick DePaula (my favorite old-school Kings fan) of The Vertical released a great piece on Rose with this sure to be viral and misinterpreted quote.
“I feel like I’m not done,” Rose said. “It’s a new start. I feel rejuvenated, and when you put all that together, when I step on the floor, I really don’t know what to expect. What I’m doing right now is just preparing myself for something big. I think we have a chance to win every game, and in the league, that’s rare. ”
Many are going to think Rose is saying the Knicks have a shot at breaking that other Super Team’s record last year and go for 82-0. What he’s saying (I think) is on a game-by-game basis, the Knicks have a chance to beat any team in the league. But that also applies to every team in the NBA not named the Philly 76ers (just kidding Ben!).
In the Vertical article, Rose also said we are going to see a more “mature player” next season.
“You’ll see the player that you saw toward the end of last year. More under control type of game, and I got a lot more options now this year. That No. 1 will always be engraved in me, and it’s not going anywhere. Twenty-five is just a new step, and a new step in the right direction.”
And the right direction is just staying healthy, winning some games and trying to make the playoffs.
Until then, let’s show a throwback video of the younger Rose, he called “reckless” and “raw.”
