I see the master taught Matt Barnes well.
Down by 4 with less than 10 seconds on the clock, the refs called a foul on master Chris Paul as former teammate Matt Barnes flopped on a 3-point shot attempt. Barnes made all 3 free throws bringing the Griz within 1 and then after a free throw contest between Jamal Crawford, Marc Gasol and Paul, the Clippers survived by 2.
“I was just glad I made it out alive,” said Paul, who also got poked in the eye by Zach Randolph in the 2nd half.
The Clippers fans weren’t too happy to see Barnes shooting 3 free throws near the end of the game but they did show him a lot of love in the first quarter when a thank you message to Barnes was shown on the video board.
“It’s still family,” Barnes said. “It’s bittersweet. I had a lot of good times here. L.A. is home but I’m in Memphis now. This is a solid situation for me, especially considering this is the team the Clippers went to war with in the playoffs. So to be traded, and end up in Memphis where I still have a chance to win, it’s a blessing.”
Doc Rivers also praised his former player.
“He was a great instigator. It’s an underrated thing in the league,” Rivers said. “He had the ability to get under people’s skin and that’s not a bad thing.”
Had and not bad? I think there’s another coach and former LA native in the league who would disagree.
