With the recent NBA Draft happening, there’s been a lot of discussions about past draft winners, losers and what ifs.  One #1 pick, since 2000, that doesn’t come up that often in discussions but had arguably the biggest global impact and was second to only LeBron James in dominance before his 7 year career was cut short by injuries was Yao Ming.

Ming had a slow start in the league but showed a shooting and passing game under under Rudy T that I wish the Rockets would of continued to improve and utilize.  Instead the Rockets brought in Jeff Van Gundy,  new uniforms and moved to a new arena the next year and with all the changes changed Yao’s game to a more traditional center game.  Yao did become one of the best big men in the league under JVG and although I miss seeing big men under the rim playing like a “true center,” I still think Yao and us, as fans, were cheated and never saw the complete game and greatness Yao was capable of.  Then injuries started to come during Yao’s 4th season and 4 years later Yao was gone

Speaking of greatness, here’s a rookie Yao Ming blocking the GOAT in OT back in 2003.   Since the block was called a goaltend, Yao finished the game with 0 blocks to go with 16 points and 11 rebounds.  As for Michael Jordan, the 40 year old Wizard finished with a game high 35 points and 11 rebounds in a win.
