The most disturbing story from the NBA Finals had nothing to do with the Heat losing game 1, the blowouts, the disappearing acts, the flops or really anything about the two teams in the NBA Finals. It was about 11 year old Mexican American Sebastian de la Cruz singing the National Anthem before games 3 and 4 of the NBA Finals and the hundreds of racist comments posted on Twitter.
If you needed anymore proof about how stupid and cruel so many people can be on social networks that display your name next to your opinion, now we have Dwight Howard’s son getting blasted with homophobic comments for doing gymnastics. Braylon Howard’s mom, Royce Reed, posted a pic of Royce on Instagram and it was instantly followed by a string of profane comments calling the son “gay” and questioning why a “good parent” would let a boy do gymnastics.
As a father of a daughter that competes in gymnastic competitions and has a great appreciation for the sport, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said “if only gymnastics was more socially acceptable and available to males – specifically inner city African-American males.”
If you appreciate the strength, coordination and athletic ability of basketball players then I don’t see how you can’t appreciate the same for gymnasts – male or female.
Check out this clip of some of the world’s coolest and best dunkers (Air Up There, TDub, Elevator, Werm) and tell me that’s not awesome.

I guess those homophobic Instagramers wouldn’t find these African-American Males amazing too. What saddens me watching these guys is that fact that they are doing this for tips in the streets and not gold medals in the Olympics.
