How ironic that Wesley Snipes would get out of jail a week before the April 15th tax deadline. If you didn’t know why he was in federal prison it’s because he was convicted on tax charges back in 2010.
The 50 year old Snipes has done a lot of memorable roles but to any hoop fan he will be most remembered as Sidney Deane from the film ‘White Men Can’t Jump’…not a corny vampire hunter in that awful Blade franchise.
Some trivia for you. The producers of the film originally wanted mainstream stars Denzel Washington and Keanu Reeves or John Cusack for the main parts. Denzel wisely passed to do Spike Lee’s Malcolm X film which allowed Spike Lee veteran Wesley Snipes to grab the role. Due to the lack of basketball skills of the Reeves and Cusack, Snipes friend and co-star from the football film ‘Wildcats.’ Woody Harrelson, was able to audition and won the role.
In honor of Snipes’ release here’s some great scenes from the landmark sports film as well as a couple other tributes to the film by white guys that want to show that they can dunk.
