The annual Houston Rockets Open Practice Scrimmage went down Sunday at the Toyota Center with a very old school feel to it.
Before the Houston Rockets hit the court, NBA great Calvin Murphy, Mr 7 Rings Big Shot Bob Horry and H-Town fan favorite Moochie Norris participated in an entertaining Q&A at center court. Then the players came out and James Harden instantly stole the show with his brand new Harden Vol.1 sneakers and John Stockton like shorts.
The game came down to the final seconds with Drew League legend Bobby Brown hitting a 3 to put his team up by 2 with a second left. Then Brown’s LAUNFD partner at the Drew, James Harden, threw his arms up and got a superstar call. His free throws put the game into OT, where the funniest moment of the day came: with about 10 second left in the extra session, Harden fouled Chinanu Onuaku on a block attempt (yes, he was playing D), gave him a quick stare down and mocked the rookie’s underhand free throw shooting form. The crowd hilariously chanted “granny shot” as Onuaku unsuccessfully tried his best Rick Barry impersonation. Harden got the ball back and attempted a 3 for the win, which was missed and tipped in at the buzzer by Clint Capela.
The day’s fun ended with Harden helping the young bloods – including Gary Payton Jr (I feel old every time I see him) – on the team dance to “Juju on the beat.”
