Jimmy Butler Drops Season-High 40 On Lakers After Telling His Coach He Was Going For 40
On November 20th of 1992, the LA Forum crowd got to watch Michael Jordan drop 54 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 blocks against the Lakers. Jordan’s 54 was a career-high against the Lakers but unfortunately for the Bulls, the performance came in a loss, snapping the Bulls’ six game win streak.
On November 20th of 2016, the LA Staples Center crowd got to watch Jimmy Butler drop a season-high 40 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists against the Lakers. Like Mike, the 40 was a career-high against the Lakers; unlike MJ, Butler was able to leave LA with a victory.
Like Mike, Butler did a pretty Jordanesque thing before the 118-110 win.
“He told me before the game, `Coach, I’m going for 40 tonight,’ and he did it.” said Coach Fred Hoiberg.
Butler is just the 4th Chicago Bull to ever score 40 against the Lakers: Bob Boozer (67), Don Kojis (67), Jordan (86, 88, 92) and Scottie Pippen (95) are the other three. Butler’s performance was also very similar to Jordan’s game in 88.
- Jordan: 42 points, 7 rebounds, 8 assists (11-23 fg)
- Butler: 40 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists (14-23 fg)
