“I am highly offended by the total lack of acknowledgement of my contribution to Laker success,” Abdul-Jabbar was quoted as saying. “I guess being the linchpin for five world championships is not considered significant enough in terms of being part of Laker history.” – Kareem in 2011
Kareem always feels disrespected when it comes basketball. It started with that bratty kid in “Airplane” and goes all the way to that bratty center that was eventually traded from LA to get Dwight Howard.
His signature shot , the sky hook, is the most unstoppable and effective move in history but nobody wants to incorporate it in their game. Even the dream shake and finger roll makes more cameos during the regular season than the skyhook. Andrew Bynum worked with Kareem for a bit but but wasn’t receptive to adding elements of KAJ’s game which angered him. Shaq was supposedly open but said in his new book that “Kareem was never around and whenever I did see him, he usually ignored me.“
He’s been fighting for a head coaching gig for over a decade but had to settle for “sitting in the back of the plane with a pay cut” with the Lakers as an assistant and consultant. Again, KAJ felt disrespected but what goes around comes around and there’s plenty of stories of people talking about their not so friendly encounter with Kareem.
Magic Johnson even talked about in one of his books that KAJ blew him off when Magic was a ball boy wanting an autograph.
Pearl Jam (originally called Mookie Blaylock after the NBA guard) wrote a song about their not so great encounter with KAJ who the leading singer idolized.
He tried to sue trading card company Upper Deck for over a million dollars for releasing a set of cards called College Greats featuring Kareem.
Last year, he wrote a letter to Scottie Pippen questioning his knowledge of the past basketball players and signed it “Affectionately, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, NBA’s All-Time Leading Scorer“
As funny as I find Kareem’s signature he is the NBA’s All-Time Leading Scorer and became that as a Laker. So Kareem will now join Jerry West, Chick Hearn and Magic Johnson as Lakers with statues outside of Staples next season. Yes he’s done enough complaining in the past about not having one but and he didn’t play his entire career in LA but 5 NBA championships, league leading stats in multiple categories, Allstar and All-NBA appearances and 3 MVPs as a Laker is enough to look past the fact that he’s a big A-Hole that had a pretty great career outside of LA.
I’m sure Kareem will still have a complaint when the statue is put up whether it’s the size or look. I’m also sure he will tweet about it just like when he tweeted
“Rumor has it that I will be getting a statue. A caveat for all my fans — don’t hold your breath. Lakers don’t care about me.“
