In honor of the Lakers reuniting Byron Scott with Kobe Bryant by signing him to a 4 year deal to coach the LA Lakers, we flashback to October 11th of 1996.
It was the first preseason game for the Lakers who were coming off their best summer ever. The game marked the first appearances by rookies Kobe Bryant & Derek Fisher, new center Shaquille O’Neal and the return of Laker great Byron Scott. If it wasn’t awesome enough to see all these Lakers make their debuts in this video, the first voice we hear is the late great Chick Hearn.
Late in the 4th quarter, the voices of Shaq and the crowd started chanting “Kobe, Kobe” to get the youngster who was tearing up the summer league some PT but he didn’t get to play. This was a reoccurring story during Kobe’s rookie season and Scott’s last. That’s OK, because Kobe would end up logging 45,567 regular season minutes and 8,641 playoff minutes over his career and with his ex teammate coaching him next season, I’m sure Kobe is going to give us a lot more surprising minutes.
