Kobe wanted to make a $500k bet w/ Gerald Wallace that he could hit a free throw with his eyes closed

Here’s three things that Kobe Bryant is really thankful for this Thanksgiving.

  1. Talent to be one of the greatest NBA players of all-time and still be one of the premier players in the league in his mid 30s.
  2. Confidence that allows him to take and make clutch shots again and again
  3. Money to burn.

All three of those things were on display at the end of the Lakers Nets game when Kobe was shooting some clutch free throws to seal a victory.   Gerald Wallace was trying to get this generations MJ to shoot some eyes shut MJ free throws but to make it worthwhile for the man with MJ like money, he would have to make “a big bet.”

Now “a big bet” to Gerald Wallace isn’t the same thing as “a big bet” for Kobe.  So when Kobe said he wanted “5,” he wanted $500k and not the 5 or maybe 50k that Wallace and his $10 million a year salary would be comfortable with.  So Wallace told him to “just shoot the free throws” and Kobe did and make with his eyes open.

Most people aren’t going to make a big deal about this but if you are a gambling man and follow lines then you will know that 1 or 2 points on the final score of that game meant millions of dollars in Vegas and had a little scare in me too.   Considering Kobe only wanted to bet $50k to play Kyrie Irving one on one then $500k sounds like Kobe is…..nevermind.  I’m just playing, please don’t run with this rumor or give David Stern a reason to start another investigation.
