Watch the video above (and don’t stop watching it before you get to LeBron’s final dunk) before reading another word below…
Now accept the fact that LeBron will never, ever, ever (did you just read that in Taylor Swift’s voice?) do the dunk contest and don’t bring up these teases on Twitter.
— LeBron James (@KingJames) February 8, 2013
This is what he said at the end of last year when asked about possibly saving the contest one day
“No,” “It’s over with. I’m getting too old for that. … There were times when I wanted to do it. But I came into All-Star Weekend a few times banged up and I didn’t want to risk further injury.”
That’s all BS. He’s more athletic in his “old age” than most dunkers coming into the league and he has as much of a shot injuring himself in the contest as Gerald Wallace has winning one. But I do believe it’s justified BS. Bottom line is he doesn’t have much to gain but he does have a lot to lose and that’s just not an exciting proposition.
Don’t bring up the time got too excited at the dunk contest and said he was going to do it when he was caught up in the moment during the Dwight vs Nate contest. It’s like your girlfriend (that you know you aren’t going to marry) catching you “in the moment” and saying do you love me. You not only said Yes you love her but you said it like you just had an epiphany. That’s what happened to LeBron when Cheryl Miller had the mic in his face.

This is what he said when he wasn’t caught up in the moment.
“It’s not me,” “I’m not a dunk contest type of guy. I’m an in-game dunker. I kind of improvise during the game.”
When Dr Evil replied would you do it for a million dollars, he didn’t do his best Meg Ryan impersonation, he just said he would “reconsider it, Wouldn’t you?“
Let me think about that one for a microsecond but his lack of enthusiasm and abundance of wealth and popularity just makes him a Hail Mary of a long shot to ever do it. Don’t bring up that he won the McDonald’s high school dunk contest either because honestly Shannon Brown deserved it and even LeBron joked it was that superstar home treatment that MJ got in the 88 dunk contest against Nique that gave him the win.
“I was the home favorite,” James admitted looking back on it. “They gave me the nod.”
Well, he’s not a local favorite anymore. He’s the world’s favorite to enter the contest from basketball fans, LeBron fans, LeBron haters to even other NBA players like Kevin Durant who tweeted this after last year’s dunk contest.
“It’s time for LeBron James, Mr. [Russell] Westbrook, Mr. [Derrick] Rose and Dwyane Wade to get in the Dunk Contest,”
My wishlist is a little different but my wish to see stars in the dunk contest compete against each other isn’t. I’m not watching the NBA dunk contest to see the “best dunks” in the world. I’ve been watching the “best dunks” for years on the Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown tour with Kenny Dobbs, Myree Bowden, Guy Dupuy, Werm, T-Dub, Young Hollywood, Air Up There, etc, etc. I want to see the leagues best do the best they can do just like the old days and since we are on the retro tip they need to ditch all these new stupid twists to the format and go back to format of the late 80s and early 90s………but sadly I think it’s just a fantasy.
