Back in 2012 the Atlanta Hawks reportedly turned down a trade that would have sent Josh Smith packing and Pau Gasol back to Atlanta or should I say finally to Atlanta.
In 2001, the Hawks wisely selected Pau Gasol over over-hyped youngsters like Eddy Curry, DeSangana Diop and Eddie Griffin (RIP) but they traded his rights to the Grizzlies for Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Lorenzen Wright (RIP) and Brevin Knight.
“We wanted to acquire talent with this draft pick that would make us the best we could be over the next five-plus years,” Hawks general manager Pete Babcock said. “We don’t have to wait for Shareef to develop, and he has a big upside because he’s only 24.”
Shareef did become an All-Star in his first season with the Hawks and did average 20 points over the next 2 seasons but then was traded (what happened to 5+ years) for Wesley Person and Rasheed Wallace, who only played 1 game for the Hawks before being traded to the Pistons for Chris Mills, Bob Sura and a future 1st round pick. That 1st round pick turned out to be Josh Smith. Funny how these things connect.
You could say that trade turned out great for Rasheed in Detroit and Josh did bring the Atlanta fans a dunk contest win but all along I wondered how well Gasol woud have done in Atlanta.
Anyways, the 5 time All-Star and 2 time NBA champion is celebrating his birthday today, so let’s take a trip down memory lane and celebrate the great Spaniard.
