The only thing more ridiculous than some of the things LaVar Ball (intentionally) says (because he’s a marketing genius) is people saying the Lakers shouldn’t draft Lonzo Ball because they will have to “deal” with his father. Controlling fathers are not only nothing new to the sports world but LaVar Ball is a big teddy bear compared to some of the Dads professional sports teams had to deal with in the past. He’s not even the craziest Dad the city of LA had to deal with. Remember Marv Marinovich, father of LA Raiders 1st round pick Todd Marinovich?
During a call with ESPNLA 710, Magic Johnson had some praise for LaVar while talking about the Lakers upcoming workout with Lonzo Ball and said he’s not concerned with LaVar being a “distraction.”
“I don’t look at any parent, when it comes to a professional league being a problem. We have always had parents who love their sons or daughters who play in professional gold (Tiger Wood’s father) or basketball (Shaq’s father) who get involved and get excited and think their child is the best. Some will say it publicly. Some will only think it. I have no problem with LaVar.”
Magic also had a pretty amusing comparison for LaVar.
“Look, the Kardashians, we didn’t say that the mom was bad, and she made them a lot of money, right? She’s bragged on her daughters, and I think it’s the same here. He’s just saying, ‘Hey, my son is great,’ and there’s nothing bad with that.”
