Another tragic youth death story out of Chicago.
Malcolm Whitney was a 5’10” rising basketball star at Chicago’s Hyde Park Academy that was a star on and off the court with a 3.8 GPA. His older brother, Michael, was a troubled 19 year old with a record of four burglary convictions that is now in jail with a $1 million bail after being charged of involuntary manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
On June 30th, Michael took a gun out of his security guard father’s bag and was taunting Malcolm in the bathroom until he accidentally fired off two shots – 1 hit Malcolm in the head. Michael then tried to cover up the accident. He dragged his brother’s body down to the living room and then shot out a window. When the police came he initially said that someone shot through the window and hit his brother while he was preparing for basketball practice but later came clean and admitted what he did.
“If I you were a parent and had a kid, he’s the kind of kid you’d want them to become,” Coach Sean Connor said about Malcolm. “At 16 years old, I think everybody in the past 24 hours has learned what a positive affect he had on so many lives for such a young man. He was humble, confident and goal-oriented.”
