Within about 24 hours, some Bulls fans got excited about adding former rookie of the year Michael Carter-Williams to the team, got mad when they heard MCW wanted to wear #1 – Derrick Rose’s old number – because it was his 76ers number, then felt good again when MCW changed his mind and said he would wear #7.
I’ve been No. 1 a lot. The discussion is probably going to be about D-Rose, that was his old number. It has nothing to do with D-Rose, who was great for this city. He’s an excellent player. I’m not trying to step on anyone’s toes or anyone’s boundaries. It’s a number I like.
They asked me what number I wanted. I said one. There wasn’t too much discussion. I know this organization respects Derrick Rose. Like I said, it has nothing to do with stepping on anyone’s toes or anything like that. He was a great player. He did a lot for the city.
According to Twitter user @bagger311, Rose even “gave his knees to his city.” Before we get to a bunch of angry tweets about the number, all I can say is if the Orlando Magic let other players wear #1 after Penny Hardaway, then the Bulls can let other players wear #1.
