Rudy Gay Trains with Hakeem Olajuwon
Rudy Gay joined a long list of NBA All-Stars that have now worked out with Hakeem Olajuwon. On Gay’s Instagram account he posted a video of himself working on some post moves under the tutelage of Master #DR34M bka Hakeem.
This could have been a more common sight 7 years ago if the Rockets would have kept their 2006 NBA draft pick Rudy Gay. There was a joke in the local Houston paper the day after the trade saying if Jerry West calls you and wants to make a trade, just hang up on him and hang onto that player. The Rockets didn’t agree with that joke and traded Gay, who they selected with the 8th pick, along with Stromile Swift for Shane Battier. Rockets GM Carroll Dawson knew that Gay had more potential than Battier but CD wanted a veteran, a defensive player and players that he thought would best support T-mac and Yao and bring a championship to Houston.
Shane is a proven winner on and off the court and he will have an immediate impact on our team this season. We believe he will be a great fit playing alongside Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming for many years to come. He is a very good defender who has also been a very consistent perimeter shooter throughout his college and pro career.
Things didn’t go as planned and not only did they not win a ring with T-Mac, Yao and Shane but they never even made it out of the first round. Battier was lucky enough to be a part of the 2007/08 Rockets that won 22 game in a row and then the 2012/13 Heat that broke that record with 27 wins and ended the season with a championship.
As for Gay, he has some new eyes (he had laser eye surgery last week) and a new teacher so hopefully he puts them to good use and earns every penny of that $17.8 million owed to him next season by the Raptors.
