Abe Schwadron of Antenna recently interviewed Shaq and asked him one of the most tired questions in basketball – Kobe or LeBron? But since this is the always outspoken Shaq and both LeBron and Kobe are ex-teammates of his, the question is actually a great one and Shaq responded with a pretty great answer.
“They’re different. LeBron is more of an all-around player — Hey this guy’s open, let me kick it to him. Kobe is more of, Oh, we’re down six? I’m going to shoot it three times and get us six points. But they’re both great players. It’s a matter of opinion. To me, Dr. J was the greatest player ever. But I ask other people, they say Jordan, some say Kobe, some people say LeBron. It’s always going to be a matter of opinion.”
What might cause more controversy than his take on Kobe and LeBron is Shaq saying, in his opinion, that Dr J is the greatest player ever. That claim shouldn’t shock any long-time Shaq fans because he’s always talked about the influence Julius Erving had on his life in interviews and his books. Shaq said he wanted to be Dr J after seeing him play in person and even once said the best day of his life was when his Dad bought him a Dr J basketball for Christmas when he was 8 years old. Then there’s this line from Shaq’s song “Outstanding” off his debut album.
Remember when you asked me this one day
Who I wanna’ be like, I said Dr. J
Then you said, Good, now you gotta’ go
Take the damn ball and slam it through the hole.
Shaq also couldn’t have picked a better place than Rucker to say that he thought the Doctor was the GOAT. There’s thousands of people in the city that will agree with him.
