To this day, one of my favorite commercials of all-time is the 2001 Nike commercial called “Freestyle.” The Afrika Bambaattaa blessed video with Baron Davis, Jason Williams, Lamar Odom, Darius Miles, George Gervin, Sheryl Swoopes and a bunch of streetballers aired during the 2001 NBA All-Star game and spawned countless online spoofs before online video parodies were popular and years before YouTube even existed. It was even spoofed in ‘Scary Movie 2.’
It sort of made it’s return during this years NBA finals with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Court Kingz streetballer Zig Zag and a minion. Yeah a minion because the ad is promoting the spin-off of the Despicable Me movies.
Now let’s take a look at the classic 2001 ad.
