Steve Nash, as a LA Laker,  joined the elite 10k assist club last night  along with Laker great Magic Johnson, Mark Jackson, Jason Kidd and all-time assist leader John Stockton.

It’s taken 17 fairly healthy seasons with a career average of 9 assists a game and 5 years of leading the league in assist  for the 2-time MVP to reach this hall of fame worthy milestone.   Sounds like a lot to accomplish which makes John Stockton’s sole membership in the 15k club mind boggling.

Stockton racked up 15,806 assists in 19 seasons.  That’s 2 more seasons than Nash and like Nash, Stockton’s first few seasons were under the 10 assist mark.  In Stockton’s 4th season he lead the league with a now unfathomable 14 assists a game to go with his 15 points a game.  He then lead the league in assist for the next 8 years averaging over 13 assist during that time and only missing 4 games!   His health has as much to do with his record as Jerry Sloan’s offense and Karl Malone’s jumper and hammer dunks.   Stockton only missed 22 games in his entire career and 18 of them came in the same season.  So that means Stockton missed only 4 games in 18 seasons.

Back to Nash, if he stays healthy and stays on pace he will pass Magic Johnson and possibly Mark Jackson this season.  Hopefully this wont be tainted in a bittersweet season.
