The most offensive thing you can ask an “artist” is what tools they use as the key to their success as opposed to just part of their arsenal. Thinking a camera is what makes the cinematographer or editing software makes a video editor is like saying the type of basketball or shoe makes the NBA player. It’s all about the skills within the person holding these tools.
When news broke that Seamus McGarvey the DP on “The Avengers” used an Iphone for some scenes in the 200 million dollar film it seem like every person with one that they had the potential to make a movie. What is not said is how much that footage goes through during post production and the lighting during the shooting. Also keep in mind the Iphones was in the hands of a skilled photographer. A couple of the Iphone shots from “The Avengers” did make it into the trailer. What shots do you think they were?
But they weren’t first to do this, the amazingly talented director of “Oldboy” Park Chan-wook shot an entire film on an Iphone.
