Thursday’s game between the Mavs and Hawks started off as another Dennis Smith Jr-is-the-steal-of-the-draft-future-dunk-champion-and-rookie-of-the-year-favorite. Then in the second quarter, the (fill in the blank) rookie tweaked his ankle, leaving the game with 9 points and 3 assists in 12 minutes. What Dallas fans ended up getting was a three-point clinic and a taste of “The Clavell and Kleber Show” during the Mavs 108-94 win.
As a team, the Mavs hit 19-of-48 threes, 9 of those 19 came from the bench duo of Clavell and Kleber. Gian Clavell made 7-of-12 total shots and 5-of-10 from deep for 19 points to go with 5 boards and 5 assists. The 19 was seven more than his previous preseason high of 12 (which only took him 11 minutes to get). Maximilian “Maxi” Kleber scored 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting and also shot 50% from three (4-8). The 16 was four more than his total points in his first four games.
