The Return of the Asics Gel-Spotlyte
When Asics comes to mind in the sneaker industry, everybody thinks of the casual sneaker collaborations with Ronnie Fieg & more running performance sneakers. Of course nobody thinks of basketball shoes with Asics in mind. Believe it or not Asics started out as a basketball brand manufacturing shoes out of Kihachiro Onitsuka‘s garage, who founded Asics back in 1949. Asics became a serious player in the basketball shoe game once they signed future Hall of Famer Isiah Thomas in 1992. Prior to wearing Asics, Isiah Thomas wore high top Converse and Puma’s. That’s where Asics came along and offered Isiah Thomas a more guard friendly sneaker that would compliment his speed & style of play. Asics even offered the All Star guard to have direct input on how Isiah himself would like the shoe to fit and compliment his game. The result, The Asics Gel-Spotlyte which will be re-released next month at your selected Asics retailers, two OG colorways getting ready to hit the shelves. Be sure to check SneakerNews’ exclusive interview with the Hall of Famer himself, Isiah Thomas as they sit down 1 on 1 & discuss the Asics Gel-Spotlyte.
