“It was a great feeling,” Carter said of the Raptors tribute to him. “I couldn’t write it any better.”
I can’t believe kids were actually debating this week whether or not the Toronto Raptors should honor Vince Carter – the most popular and exciting player in franchise history – when the Grizzlies faced off against the Raptors on Wednesday night. Thankfully they did for many reasons but none bigger than the fact that the Raptors are still in Toronto because of Vinsanity.
Even though the Raptors drafted rookie of the year Damon Stoudemire, big man Marcus Camby, high schooler Tracy McGrady, the only reason why people outside of Toronto cared to watch the Raptors who were on national TV almost as much as the Lakers between 1999-2004 is because of Vinsanity. The only reason why Raptors jerseys were selling like Michael Jordan jerseys was because of Vince Carter who led in All-Star voting 4 out of 5 years – only Michael Jordan has led in All-Star voting more than Carter. And the only reason why Raptors highlights on Sportscenter each night featured 90% Carter highlights even when the Raptors lost is because of Vinsanity aka (IMO) the most exciting time in dunk history.
It was amazing. They asked me earlier how I would feel or how would I react. You can’t prepare for that whether it was a surprise or you knew it was coming. It was just an amazing feeling and to just be in the moment. See it. Kind of relive it. As it was happening you see all of the stuff and all of the people you played with. As each play was happening I could remember it like it was yesterday.” – Vince Carter
This season marks my 21st (damn I’m old!) year following Vince Carter – yes that means I’ve been following his career since me and him were sophomores in high school. So I’m obviously very biased when it comes to the man, but when I saw Vince get emotional during the Raptors’ video tribute I couldn’t help but get a little emotional too and I’m assuming even the most hard and un knowledgeable basketball fan had to either get teary-eyed or at least crack a smile. If not, then I guess you were never lucky enough to have suffered from Vinsanity.
