“Sitting at home watching Lakers/ Rockets game and saw my old teammate Yao. Miss playing with him.”
That’s what Tracy McGrady posted on his Facebook page when he saw his former teammate. I was going to update my status or tweet my similar feelings too but that would require about 100 tweets so instead I wrote the following in a blog post.
I can’t stand watching the Rockets play now. It’s nothing against any player on the team or the franchise because I love the franchise. I have projects with two ex Rockets (Horry & Mo Taylor), an ex coach (Rudy T) and I’m friends with the ex VP of players (Robert Barr) so I gotta love the franchise. Speaking of franchises, Steve “Franchise” Francis was one of my favorites players of all-time. Then there’s Tmac. A lot of my first video mixes about 10 years ago were about or inspired by TMac and his cousin Vince.
So when I turn on the Rockets and see a bunch of very talented but not so “exciting” blue collar workers it just breaks my heart because I miss seeing the larger than life characters like The Dream, Glyde, Big Shot Bob, Barkley,
(Pippen was intentionally not mentioned) then onto Franchise, Cat, Tmac and Yao. There’s not much more praise that can be said about Clutch City in the 90s other than they are underrated champions but the Rockets of the new millennium had so much talent and potential cut short by injuries (Tmac & Yao), bad trades (Rudy Gay for Battier) and unfortunate stories like Eddie Griffin.
Enough old-man-back-in-the-day tears from me. Check out a few very random but favorite Rocket moments and if you are in Houston come join me on March 31 for the Houston Rockets’s Blacktop Battle outside the Toyota Center. It’s a great event and I know for a fact the Slam Dunk Contest is going to be great (remember the name Sir Issac). I’ll be the guy wearing some Reebok Yao shoes and a red Ballislife shirt under my Horry jersey. Might have a retro 90’s Rockets snapback on too.
