Rookie Zach LaVine likes the big stage. He’s “only” averaging 9.8 points per game this season (21 ppg in April) but earlier in the year when he got to face his childhood idol Kobe Bryant, he went off for a career-high 28 points. Then at All-Star weekend after being hyped as the clear favorite to win the always disappointing NBA dunk contest, LaVine somehow managed to not only win and not disappoint but he drew comparisons to Vince Carter who had the unanimous best dunk contest performance of all-time.
Last night Zach and the TWolves had the challenge of facing off against the Warriors and Steph Curry who’s coming off one of the greatest shooting exhibitions of all-time and Zach stepped up big. He scored a career-high 37 points while connecting on a career-high 6 3-pointers and also had a career-high 9 rebounds. The 37 was also a franchise rookie record.
The Warriors did get the win and Stephen Curry did have 34 (20 in the first half) but it was a real thrill for us to see the former Ballislife All-American player and dunk contest winner pull off a performance like this and I’ll quote myself when I was at All-Star weekend in a room full of former NBA players who were gushing over LaVine’s first contest dunk: You guys haven’t seen anything yet!
