Let’s go back to before Allen Iverson had the afro, the cornrows, injuries and tattoos on every inch of his body and legal problems…wait not that far because then we would be in middle school. Actually let’s go to 1993 when a 17 year old Iverson and several of his friends got into a black vs white brawl at a bowling alley. The police only arrested Iverson and his entourage and AI was accused of hitting a women in the head with a chair. He maintained his innocence but drew a 15 year prison sentence but only served 4 months at a correction facility until he was granted clemency by the Virginia Governor. AI had to serve his senior year at a high school for “at-risk students” but his 3 years of playing ball was enough to convince Georgetown coach John Thompson to give him a full scholarship.
Iverson may not have fit the criteria of huge big men like Zo, Ewing, and Mutombo that Thompson liked but Iverson was able to dunk on college centers that fit Thompson’s criteria. He was the quickest player in college and arguably had the most hops of any player not playing for UNC. Dunking on defenders, catching reverse alley oops and missed shots became as common as broken ankles.
After two impressive seasons which included a Big East Rookie of the year and a First Team All American accolade, Iverson would become the first player to ever leave Georgetown early under Coach Thompson.
You know how the rest of the story goes. Hair, points, tatoos, points, rap album, points, problems, points, practice, points, we talking about practice, points and now he’s still hoping to get back in the league and show that he can still put up some points.
