Below, you’ll find our guide for understanding the odds for tonight’s NBA games and those happening in the future. Continue reading to finish betting on the NBA season strong.
With 30 NBA teams, upward of 15 games can occur each day. During the regular season, there are 82 games for each NBA team. After that, the top teams enter the postseason, which features multiple rounds with a best-of-seven series.
You get it—plenty of odds and lines to sort through, including NBA lines for today, March 21, 2023.
Here, we’ll look at examples of odds for tonight’s NBA games, but these can also be used for games happening later, as we’ll educate you on what they mean and how to read them.
We’ll preface the next section by reviewing how to generally read the odds in an NBA game. We’ll focus on what the “-” and “+” mean through the lens of wagering or winning $100.
There are 6 popular NBA lines that we would like to mention in this guide. See our examples and explanations that follow.
With a moneyline wager, you’ll be betting on which team you think will win the game outright, with no strings attached. As with any sport, certain NBA teams are simply better than others, and the moneyline will reflect that.
While the moneyline focuses on just who will win the game, the point spread still does as well, but with a twist. The NBA point spread is a number assigned to demonstrate the gap in power between two teams. The odds associated with a point spread bet are consistently at or around -110, as this bet aims to make the teams equal.
The example below is between the Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks. The spread is 14 points, with the Hawks as the favorite and the Pistons as the underdog.
In this case, if you bet the Hawks, you’ll need the Hawks to win by more than 14. If you bet on the Pistons, you’ll need them to either win outright or, if they do lose, lose by less than 14.
|DET Pistons||+14 -110|
|ATL Hawks||-14 -110|
When you hear about totals bets, you can also think of these as betting on the over or under. NBA sportsbooks will have the basketball lines for tonight for this bet type posted right next to the point spread and moneyline wagers.
The goal here is to bet on whether or not the final score will exceed or fall short of the line. The odds for this wager also sit at or around -110.
As seen below, the line in the Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Clippers game is 238.5. If the Clippers win 120-105, the combined score is 225, which falls into the “under” category.
|Oklahoma City Thunder||+7 -110||+220||Over 238.5 -110|
|LA Clippers||-7 -110||-270||Under 238.5 -110|
For NBA betting, you’ll have access to three types of prop bets: Player, game, and team. With prop bets, you’ll bet on events within an NBA game.
As mentioned, there can be multiple NBA games on any given day. With parlay betting, you wager on multiple games on a single bet slip and receive improved NBA odds. The only catch here is that each game you add to a parlay must be a winning wager for it to succeed. For example, if you add three games and only two wins, the entire parlay is a loss—you won’t receive partial payment for the wins.
Example: You Pick three betting lines
The individual betting lines of each contest are -115, -110, and -110, respectively. Together, however, they’re +581.
Another way you can create a parlay is through the Same Game Parlay feature, assuming the sportsbook you’re playing at offers it. Instead of multiple games, an SGP focuses on one game. Like a traditional parlay, an SGP has multiple contests that need to win for it to succeed, too.
Futures betting markets allow players to wager on the NBA all season long and even before it starts. These markets focus on the winners of divisions, conferences, the champion of the league, and individual player awards. The odds on these wagers can change daily, so monitoring them is important.
Whether you’re looking to bet tonight or another day, we have three quick tips to use immediately to profit more on the NBA.
The NBA season is long and arduous, and players get beat up. As a result, they may land on the injury report and miss time or have limited playing time. It’s important to monitor these daily as a specific player can change the trajectory and analysis of a game.
This can tie into injury reports as his backup could receive additional playing time if a player is hurt. This help if you’re in the player props betting market. For example, suppose Detroit Pistons guard Killian Hayes misses tonight’s game. Cory Joseph could get more opportunities to stuff the stat sheet in that case.
This tip applies, especially if you’re betting on teams in the same division and playing one another frequently. You can look at head-to-head statistics to see how teams perform against one another and the context within those games, such as injuries and location
As of March 2023, more than half of the United States allows for online sports betting, including the NBA. As a professional league, there are no restrictions on how you can bet. If a state has legal sports betting, NBA betting will be offered at the sportsbooks available there.
