We at Ballislife have dedicated our entire site to the performance of basketball players. With online sports betting, we (and you) can now bet on NBA player prop bets which are somewhat similar to fantasy basketball.

If you’re new to the NBA player prop betting markets, you’re in the right place—let’s learn about it in more detail in this player prop guide.

Best NBA Player Prop Bets Betting Guide Strategies

Whether you’ve made NBA player prop bets before or not, you’ll be happy to know that this is one of the most popular ways to bet on this sport.

With more than 80 games in the regular season and four best-of-seven series in the NBA playoffs, there are an incalculable number of NBA player prop betting opportunities.

The guide below touches on all things to do with player props, as mentioned above, but we want to emphasize the strategies portion because there are things you can do in your evaluation to put yourself in the best position possible to win these bets.

NBA Player Prop Bets Betting Explained

There are three types of NBA prop bets, but the single-player ones are by far the most popular.  With this bet type, you’ll focus on the statistical performance of an individual player. There are numerous single-player statistics that you’ll be able to bet on.

How does NBA Player Prop Bets Betting Work?

The best way to think about props is that they’re events that happen within an event. With player props, you’ll be predicting how a player performs. With these NBA prop bets, you’ll be betting on them like you would on a totals wager—by betting the over or under.

Whether it’s points, rebounds, or assists, each player will have a line that you’ll have to bet will go over or under the number the online NBA sportsbooks provides.

How To Read NBA Player Prop Bets

After you’ve landed on the player props page and seen the line that you’ll be over or under on, you’ll then see a number next to it with a “-” or “+” next to it.

The “-” indicates the favored team, and the “+” is for the underdog. Here’s the best way to think about these regarding money.

  • With “-” odds - the number next to it represents how much you need to wager to win $100. For example, if you have -189 odds, you’ll need to wager $189 to win $100.

  • With “+” odds - the number associated with it is how much you’ll win if you bet $100. For example, if you have +147 odds, you’ll win $147 if you bet $100.

Best NBA Player Prop Bets Today: Online Sportsbook Examples

When it comes to the NBA player prop betting market, there are numerous types available, but not all sportsbooks will have the same options available. Below, we’ll look at the various player prop options, explain them, and provide a screenshot to illustrate them.

1. Points

The most common single-player NBA prop bet is the total points a player will score.

2. Rebounds

A rebound in basketball is when a player takes possession of the ball after missed shot by either team. There are two types of rebounds—offensive and defensive. Offensive rebounds are when you get a rebound after a missed shot from the player's team and defensive is taking possession of the ball from a missed shot by the opposing team.

3. Assists

An assist is given to a player who passes the ball to another player and that player scores a basket immediately after.

4. Three-Point Shots

A three-point shot in the NBA is a shot made behind the three-point arch, which is over 23 feet from the center of the basket. With this prop, you’ll wager on the number of three-point shots a player makes during the game.

5. Double-Doubles

A double-double in basketball is racking up 10 more of any of the following statistics: Points, rebounds, assists, steals, or blocks. For example, if a player scores 11 points and has 12 rebounds, this is a double-double. With this prop, you’ll simply bet whether it’ll happen or not.

6. Triple-Doubles

A triple-double is when you have 10 or more of three of the five statistics listed above. For example, if a player has 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists, this is a triple-double.

7. Combo Props

With combo props, you’ll still have a line that you wager over or under on, but it’ll combine various statistics, including the following:

  • Points and rebounds
  • Points and assists
  • Assists and rebounds
  • Points, rebounds, and assists
  • Steals and blocks

8. Blocks

A player is credited with a block when, on defense, they stop a shot attempt from a player on the other team by directly getting their hand on it as it’s traveling to the hoop.

9. Steals

When a player manages to take the ball away from an opposing player without fouling them, they’ll receive credit for a steal.

10. Turnovers

A turnover is a negative statistic for a player, but we can still bet on it. Players are hit with a turnover if they lose possession of the ball to the opposing team when they don’t foul, get fouled, shoot the ball, or go out of bounds.

NBA Player Prop Bets Betting Strategies

There are plenty of NBA strategies for NBA player props betting, but to get you started, we have four that’ll immediately put you in a better position to win more money.

Look for Underdog Betting Value

When looking at a prop betting menu, look for the wagers with noticeable underdogs.

For example, if a player is +143 to go over 2.5 made three-point shots, it may be worth digging into their statistics to see how often they go over that number, how recent was it, how often they shoot three-points, what’s their three-point shooting percentage, and so on.

We’ll never recommend betting something for the sake of underdog odds, but when this happens, it’s worth looking into to see how feasible it is, as this is value beyond what you may typically find. Please don’t force it, though.

Research Statistics For Individual Teams

Whenever we go into betting on player props, we examine the team the player at hand is playing against.

If the player we’re considering wagering on averages a fair number of points and the team they’re playing against allows the most points in the league to opposing teams per game basis, this is a good first sign.

Of course, you can go much deeper here, but something as simple as that can help with researching prop bets.

Live Betting Props

With live betting, you can now wager on your favorite game as it’s happening live, and yes, you can do prop bets live. This works great if, for example, you were hesitant before a game because of an injured player.

Let’s say the player was injured, and you weren’t sure they were going to play, but they ultimately played and were playing well, you can bet on them live.

  • Let’s say after the first quarter, the player scores eight points, and their line is now 33.5 points.

  • Well, if you multiply eight points across four quarters, you arrive at 32, which is just under 33.

However, you can consider how many shots they attempted to get to the eight points, what kind of shots they were, and so on.

With live prop betting, you’re able to see how a player is performing in real time and make a more well-informed decision. It’s a betting market we recommend participating in, but only if you’re actively watching the game in real time.

Odds Shopping

This is a tip that you can use with any betting market, but especially with player props. Odds shopping is when you look at the odds and lines for the same wager at multiple sportsbooks to see which provides the most value to you.

For example, if you look at one sportsbook and see that LeBron James’ total points are at 25.5 with -110 odds, and then you go to another sportsbook, and he’s 24.5 and -110, you can take whichever side makes the most sense for you.

If you bet over 25.5, you could get one point of value with the other sportsbook with the same odds. The screenshots below show Bradley Beal’s point lines and odds. As you’ll see, the line on the points is the same, but the odds are slightly different.
