The initial proposal also suggested a strict advertising ban, including an operator ban on any televised sports action. However, this was later overturned. It was also noted that a maximum of fifteen sports betting licenses would be distributed throughout the state.

A brief history of mobile sports betting in Massachusetts

January 2018:
The first step was taken by MA state lawmakers back in 2018 when a daily fantasy sports bill was filed. Although little came of the proposal, it would have required lawmakers to review the impact of legal online wagering.
May 2018:
PASPA was overturned just four months after the initial DFS bill was rejected in MA. PASPA was deemed unconstitutional and this development would soon allow all states to decide their own position on sports betting.
August 2022:
After four deflections, agreements were made on the fifth session discussing online sports betting in MA. From this point onwards,
sports betting is considered legal in Massachusetts, and 15 licenses are up for grabs.
January 2023:
On 31st March 2023, MA retail sportsbooks opened their doors legally for the first time.
March 2023:
The Mass sports betting sites went live to Bay State sports fans on March 10th, 2023. Ten licenses have already been agreed upon; however, six officially launched on March 10th. MA sports betting can now be enjoyed online through DraftKings, Barstool, BetMGM, FanDuel, WynnBet, and Caesars.
