World Cup Best Bets: England vs Congo

The overwhelming favorite to win this match is England, which is priced at +800 (FanDuel) to win the World Cup. If they get past Congo, the Three Lions will face red-hot Mexico in the Round of 16.

Is there a path for Congo to upset England on Wednesday in a match that will be played in scorching Atlanta? The teams will walk on the pitch at high noon eastern time, with temperatures expected to be near 100 degrees.

Congo is expert at sitting in the low block to dampen opponent opportunities, by clogging that end of the pitch. This strategy feeds into the sort of "one man show" that features three-time goal scorer Yoane Wissa for Congo.

But there are two factors that lead me to believe England can withstand a slow, sweaty, brain-frying match in "Hotlanta." That's their ability to control possession. Given the imbalance, Congo could be forced into taking more chances, and with a poor passing team that could lead to mistakes. Among teams still in the FIFA World Cup, only Cape Verde has a lower Passing Efficiency than Congo.

Key Match Stats (ENG vs COD)

• Fatigue is a factor in soccer: the highest percentage of goals (22%) have occurred between the 75th and 90th minute in this World Cup, according to FIFA data. England has the second-most such late goals in this tournament. Expert substitution is also a reason why.
• England has forced only 105 turnovers, the 46th lowest total in the group stage. Reason to worry? No:  that's an indicator of how much England controls the ball: at 60% Possession Control, the UK ranks second in the tournament.
• England, according to FIFA stats, has allowed the fewest shots inside the penalty area among teams still playing in the World Cup.
• A weakness for Congo is its Passing Efficiency (81%) which comes in below the tournament average of 87%.

Curses anyone? England has waited six decades for a second World Cup title. Juggernaut France may keep that drought intact, but the Three Lions should have enough to defeat one of Africa's best sides today.

World Cup Best Bets: Belgium vs. Senegal

The best teams in the tournament, the ones favored to win, rate high in Expected Goal Efficiency (xG efficiency.), a good rate is above 1.25. France is at 1.65, and the United States comes in at 1.53, for example. But, after three matches, Belgium's xEG efficiency is only 0.92, according to official FIFA stats. By comparison, Senegal is at 1.56 xG efficiency.

Which means so far in the 2026 World Cup, Belgium is not performing well at converting goals in situations where it has a good expectation to place the ball in the net.

Belgium emerged from arguably the weakest group in group stage play. But its opponent in Seattle today is gifted. Senegal managed to slide into the Round of 32 based on its slim margin of goals as a third-place team. Much of that came on a 5-0 shellacking of an underwhelming Iraqi team. In the two matches it played against top world competition, the Senegalese were outscored 6-3. But this is a program that has two international cup titles in the last five years, both coming at the Africa Cup of Nations.

• Belgium peppers the net with shots: its 73 attempts on goal are tied for second in the tournament. But, Belgium leads among teams still in the World Cup with 30 off-target shots on goal.
• Belgium has attempted 50 shots inside the penalty area, the second most in the World Cup.
• Senegal holds a wide advantage in Attempts at Goal Conversion Rate: 16% to just 8%.
• Only three teams in the Round of 32 had a lower Attempts at Goal Conversion Rate in the Group Stage than Belgium's 8%. Belgium was 6-for-73 in its first three games in goals converted on attempts.

If the U.S. wins tonight, the winner of this match would be its next opponent. This contest is the most evenly matched of Wednesday's tilts. Ultimately, I don't trust Belgium's accuracy: all those errant shots on goal are indicative of a desperate team, and Senegal is experienced enough to take advantage in what could be a match decided by penalty shootout.

World Cup Best Bets: USA vs. Bosnia

The United States seeks to win its first game in the Knockout Stage since the famous "Dos a Cero" win in the Round of 16 against Mexico in 2002. Much has changed in U.S. Men's Soccer in the more than two decades since. The roster is deeper, faster, and goaltending is better than it's ever been for the Red, White and Blue.

The challenge of Bosnia and Herzegovina is manageable for the United States, who will play in Santa Clara. Bosnia is sloppy (more fouls than any team in the World Cup), and while the offense is efficient, it does not create many scoring chances. It has averaged nine shots on goal in the FIFA World Cup, as opposed to 15 by the U.S. in three games.

Bosnia has only one win in this tournament, and the 61st-ranked team in the world hasn't won back-to-back matches since September 2025. Since, BIH is 2-2-7 in Cup qualifiers and World Cup group play.

Key Match Stats (USA vs BIH)

• Bosnia has only 1.83 Expected Goals (xG), which ranked 43rd out of 48 teams in the Group Stage. The team has managed to get five goals in the net, but that "luck" doesn't normally continue when a team is outperforming it's xG.
• The U.S. (18%) and Bosnia (19%) rank 7th and 5th respectively in Attempts at Goal Conversion Rate among nations still competing. Both teams are efficient with set plays and scoring chances.
• Bosnia's 46 fouls are tied for the most by a nation in the Group Stage. It had a -15 differential in Fouls For/Fouls Against, as opposed to +4 for the U.S. team.

Host teams are 6-2-1 on their own home soil in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The U.S. slipped to a loss in its last match but wasn't really playing for anything. Now, it will attempt to become the third host nation to advance to the Round of 16. Bosnia won't be able to put up enough offense to upset the Americans in what may be a tight, lower-scoring affair than we saw in the first three matches (4 goals per game totals in USA matches).
