2026 FIFA World Cup Best Bets (July 7): Argentina vs. Egypt, Switzerland vs. Colombia Odds & Predictions

A pair of matches will be played today in the FIFA World Cup, one involving the impressive defending champion Argentina national team. In the later match, Switzerland tries to halt a five-match losing streak in Round of 16 appearances.

World Cup Best Bets Today: Argentina vs. Egypt (July 7)

Argentina showed a chink in its armor the last time on the pitch, needing 111 minutes to before depositing a winning goal against Cape Verde. We'll learn today whether that was an aberration or a sign of weakness from the champs.

Lionel Messi is doing everything he can to bring a repeat to Argentina: he has seven goals in four matches. Egypt has fewer goals than Messi in this tournament: outscoring opponents 6-4  in its four matches. It seeks to reach the quarterfinals for the first time ever after getting into the knockout phase for the first time.

There is a reason Argentina is a big favorite: the roster for Egypt is not nearly as deep or talented. The Pharaohs have only two players from the Premier League: Mohamed Salah (Liverpool), Omar Marmoush (Manchester City). On the other side, Argentina boasts six players from the top European League: Enzo Fernández (Chelsea), Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool), Lisandro Martínez (Manchester United), Nicolás Domínguez (Nottingham), Cristian Romero (Tottenham), and Marcos Senesi (Tottenham). Plus, Argentina has Messi and several of the best and most storied players from South American competition.

Of the eight Round of 16 tilts, this match is most likely to be lopsided. Egypt has to muscle Argentina and hope to get a lead and hold on. But the Egyptians are undermanned.

World Cup Best Bets Today: Switzerland vs. Colombia (July 7)

One way or another, something unusual will happen from this match. Either the Swiss will get to the quarterfinals for the first time in the modern era of the World Cup, or Colombia will get there for the first time since 2014, and the second time ever. Powerhouses these nations are not.

As shown in the stats below, Colombia is the worst team in this knockout phase at converting chances relative to the quality of those chances, based on xG. In addition, Colombia shows less initiative than its opponent at breaking the line, which is the tactic to alter the shape of the other team's defensive unit. That's one of the reasons Colombia takes so many shots outside the penalty area, which predictably leads to errant, low value attempts.

Key Match Stats (Switzerland vs Colombia)

• Colombia's xG Efficiency of 0.79x is the lowest of the teams that advanced to the Round of 16, and ranked 38th in the World Cup of all teams from the Group Phase.
