Six matches are on the World Cup schedule for the third Friday in the tournament. All 12 teams taking to the pitch have either clinched a spot in the knockout stage or still have a chance to do so today.

The top-ranked team playing today is France, which has already advanced, and can win its group with a win or draw. In Group H there are so many scenarios you'd need a slide ruler, a calculator, and an abacus to count them all. But the easiest thing to say is that all four nations in Group H can advance to the knockout stage with a win on Friday.

2026 FIFA World Cup Best Bets: Uruguay vs. Spain

The only match in the group stage that features two former FIFA World Cup champions is this matchup on Friday evening in Guadalajara between Spain and Uruguay. More than pride and bragging rights are on the line: the winner (if there is a winner) of this match will take Group H for sure. If there is a draw, either team could still take the group, depending on how the Cape Verde/Saudi Arabia match turns out.

Spain, behind star Lamine Yamal, is considered a threat to win the World Cup. But, a surprising draw in its opening match against Cape Verde has brought up many questions. Now, they can defeat a very talented Uruguay team to still snatch the group. This match will bring out high competitive spirit in both nations.

But Uruguay has not won a match in its last five outings, settling for four draws and a loss. That won't work on Friday: the team needs a point to advance to the Round of 32.

Uruguay has never failed to make the knockout round in successive World Cups. It was eliminated in the Group Stage four years ago. I don't see that happening again. I believe both of these teams will get to play again after Friday.

2026 FIFA World Cup Best Bets: Cape Verde vs. Saudi Arabia

The Cinderella of the 2026 World Cup is turning out to be Cape Verde, a tiny island nation in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa. Few Americans have probably ever been there, and many may not know where it is, but Cape Verde's athletes have brought the country much attention in the past few weeks.

Yes, there's enough land on Cape Verde for a soccer pitch, obviously considering the two draws they have managed in Group Stage play. Despite scoring only a pair of goals, Cape Verde is one win and a little help away from grabbing the No. 2 spot in Group H.

These teams have managed to score three goals combined in the tournament. The Saudis don't seem to know where the net is on the pitch. Some of that is a result of excellent goaltending, and some is the speed at which both play in the midfield. Both of these teams like to use speed to keep the ball on the outside and stay away from direct pressures. For the Saudis, there are limited resources for scoring. Which is why I like this match to be a nail-biter and under.

2026 FIFA World Cup Best Bets: Egypt vs. Iran

Here's how this match can impact the futures of these teams:

• Egypt will advance to the Knockout Stage with a win/draw OR a Belgium loss/draw.
• Iran advances with a win OR a draw AND a Belgium draw.

This is the first time Egypt (1-0-1) and Iran (0-0-2) have every played one another in the FIFA World Cup. If the match has an outright winner, that winner is likely to capture Group G.

The key to this match may be someone who won't suit up: Egypt center Hamdi Fathi is out with a leg injury. His absence will place even more pressure on largely untested or long-in-the-tooth scorers for the Pharaohs.
