Publish Date: Jun 28, 2026
Fact checked by: Matt Moreno
Key Points
  • Canada faces South Africa in first match of Knockout Stage of 2026 FIFA World Cup in Inglewood, California.
  • 31 matches will be played in subsequent rounds until the next World Cup champion is crowned. Losing teams are immediately eliminated in this knockout phase.
  • Favored Canada (vs South Africa) has never won a match in the Knockout Stage of the World Cup.

The first act of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has concluded, and following a blink-and-miss-it intermission, the tournament is lifting the curtain on Act II today in Southern California. Team Canada will meet South Africa this afternoon in Inglewood, California.

This is called the Knockout Stage of the World Cup. Every match is a must-win. If you lose, you're out. Which intensifies the drama of the sporting event as it culminates in a championship match just over three weeks from today.

World Cup Best Bets: Match Odds for South Africa vs. Canada (June 28)

With each match needing to play out to a winning team, you'll need to understand that Home Win/Draw/Road Win odds are now specifically attached to the outcome in regulation time (90 minutes and stoppage time):

  • Canada To Win on Moneyline: -235
  • South African To Win on Moneyline: +360
  • Draw in Regulation Time: +600

In this phase of the World Cup, if a match is tied after 90 minutes + stoppage time, two 15-minute halves are played in full. If the match is still tied after that 30 minutes, a penalty shootout is held.

You'll see basic "To Advance" odds in your favorite sportsbook. This is simply a wager on which team will advance, whether via a regulation-time win, or in extra time or a shootout.

  • Canada To Advance: -330
  • South Africa To Advance: +250

World Cup Best Bets: Canada to Win by More Than One Goal

South Africa has not impressed much this tournament. The team has scored two goals in three matches. Yet somehow it squeaked into the No. 2 position in Group A. The lack of offensive firepower won't bode well on Sunday when it faces a quick Canadian lineup.

Team Canada had 21 shots on target in the group stage, with its opponents only producing seven. Jonathan David scored three goals, and his running mate Nathan Saliba has two assists and a goal. Granted, six goals were put on the board by Canada in its match against overwhelmed Qatar, but David and Saliba are one of the most dynamic duos in the World Cup.

Canadian star Alphonso Davies is also expected to return to the lineup and make his 2026 World Cup debut Sunday.

  • Canada -1.25 Goals (+165 from DraftKings)

This $100 wager pays out $165 if Canada is up by more than 1.25 goals after 90 minutes + stoppage time. Any goals in extra time or penalty shootouts are not included.

David Promise Player Prop

In 5 international cup games the last two years, Promise has scored two goals and had one assist. The Ontario native usually finds himself in the thick of scoring chances for the Canucks. He's taken four shots this tournament and three have been on target. Promise's 7.83 Shots On Target per 90 is third-highest for players who have started at least two games in the World Cup.

  • David Promise To Score 1+ Goal, Including Extra Time (+160 from DraftKings)
