The UFC heads back to Atlantic City, New Jersey for the first time since 2018 and they put together a stacked fight night event for the fans. Headlining the fight card are two of the best fighters in the women's flyweight division Erin Blanchfield and Manon Fiorot.
However, we take a look at a marquee matchup in the featherweight division between Bill Algeo and Kyle Nelson and give out our prediction and pick for this Algeo-Nelson matchup.
Bill Algeo (18-7) is now 5-3 in the UFC but is coming off back-to-back dominant victories over Alexander Hernandez and TJ Brown who he submitted in round two. He's been at this game for a long time making his professional debut back in 2012 and finally making his UFC debut in 2020 after six years on the regional scene.
Algeo is the type of fighter that will fight anyone, anywhere, and anytime as he will never back down from a challenge. That's exactly how he fights in the Octagon as well.
He never wants to take a step back and is already pushing the pace and being the aggressor which is certainly what he will be doing against Kyle Nelson in this matchup.
Algeo may not excel in one area but he is good everywhere and it's his relentless pressure and being able to mix in the strikes with his grappling that makes him so hard to deal with. Also, he has cardio for days, and by having that he's able to take his opponents into deep waters as the fight gets into the second and third rounds.
With Algeo having the upper hand as the fight gets deeper he's going to want to take the fight to Nelson right from the start and if he's able to do that he has the chance to extend his winning streak to three in a row.
Kyle Nelson (15-5-1)Β had a very rocky start to his UFC career losing four out of his first five fights inside the Octagon with three of those losses coming inside the distance. He has bounced around between lightweight and featherweight but after consecutive wins at featherweight, he's finally found his home.
Nelson had his back against the wall in the Doo Ho Choi fight after consecutive losses but was able to fight to a majority draw after a point deduction from Choi. That gave Nelson some new life as he was able to get another crack at it when he dominated Blake Bilder as a 2-1 underdog and then came in and did one better against an even better prospect dominating Fernando Padilla as another 2-1 underdog.
Nelson seems to thrive as the underdog and it's no different here in this matchup against Algeo. He brings that Canadian toughness to the Octagon every time he goes out there.
He has some heavy hands and is willing to throw down in the pocket with just about everyone. Seeing as Algeo sure is hittable, there is a chance that Nelson could crack his chin and potentially out-strike Algeo as long as he keeps his back from hitting the mat to score yet another upset victory in the process.
This fight should be eerily similar to the fight between Kyle Nelson and Billy Quarantillo mainly because Bill Algeo does a lot of things similar to Quarantillo. They both push a relentless pace and they both mix in the grappling with their striking very well.
The way that strikes have never finished Algeo leads me to believe that he will be able to withstand the power that Nelson possesses and just walk him down landing his strikes and taking him down to dominate him there.
Ultimately, things seem to be a bit dicey in the early going but the pace and constant forward pressure and grappling of Algeo will wear down Nelson until Algeo either finds the finish or gets the nod on the judge's scorecards.
FINAL ALGEO-NELSON PICK & PREDICTION: BILL ALGEO (-245)
