The Cleveland Cavaliers have now lost their last two games and failed to cover the spread as the underdog both times and they will look to turn things around when they continue their west road trip when they take on the Los Angeles Clippers in this Sunday showdown. We take a look at this matchup to make a Cavaliers-Clippers prediction and pick.
Cleveland's (46-32) matchup in Los Angeles presents a must-win situation for the Cavaliers. Arriving with losses in seven out of their last 10 games, the Cavs need to break their slump and rediscover their defensive intensity. The Clippers, with Paul George playing at a high level, pose a serious threat, and their grinding style of play can overwhelm a Cavaliers squad that is struggling mightily. For the Cavs, it's about limiting turnovers and controlling the pace. Donovan Mitchell will need to be on his game, after a down game against the Lakers, to combat George, James Harden, and the rest of this Clippers squad so that they don't dip anymore in the Eastern standings and gain some momentum heading into the playoffs when they matchup in this Sunday afternoon showdown.
Los Angeles (49-28) is set to defend their home court against the Cleveland Cavaliers this Sunday afternoon in a highly anticipated showdown. The Clippers have been dealt some blows with recent injuries with star forward Kawhi Leonard out dealing with a knee injury for the last three games. However, Paul George and the rest of this Clippers team have picked up the slack winning their last two games. It's up to Paul George to spearhead this Clippers offense as they make this playoff push when they play host to Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers in this home showdown on Sunday afternoon.
The Cleveland Cavaliers are still gunning for the 2 seed in the Eastern Conference and are desperate as they come into this matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers. They have now dropped back-to-back games that were much-needed wins against the Suns and the Lakers which were devastating losses for the Cavaliers. In their most recent loss to the Lakers, it was an uncharacteristic game for Donovan Mitchell who had just 10 points. Also, Mitchell along with Jarrett Allen, and Evan Mobley combined for just 30 points in their 97-116 blowout loss.
It was Darius Garland who stepped up to the scoring role for the Cavaliers as he led the team with 26 points. Garland showing up when the rest of the team didn't is a good sign because once the rest of the team returns to form, and they will, Garland can step up and make the buckets needed to get the win just like in this matchup with the Clippers. The three-headed monster that is Mitchell-Allen-Mobley will certainly need to pick up where they left off before their game against the Lakers and if they can do that and this team just returns to form they can make it tough on a Kawhi-less Clippers team. Cleveland will be coming out of the gate hot looking to get their last two wins back before they start to slip down the Eastern Conference standings.
The Los Angeles Clippers are the team to watch out for as they make their playoff push in the Western Conference. Even without Kawhi Leonard, they've been getting it done showing how deep this team is. In their most recent blowout win against the Utah Jazz, the Clippers won as a collective unit with eight players scoring in double figures. While George spearheaded this lineup, he only had to play 20 minutes and scored just 12 points and the Clippers were still able to win with relative ease.
However, the Cavaliers are a different team altogether, and will be a stiffer test but not one that the Clippers can't overcome. With the way this Cavaliers team has been struggling mightily on defense, George, Harden and the Clippers can take full advantage. With the Clippers' newfound intensity on defense as well as their solid play on offense, they can keep things rolling as we head toward the end of the regular season.
The Cleveland Cavaliers have some uphill sledding ahead of them going against the surging Los Angeles Clippers. The Cavaliers are just 3-7 in their last 10 and even worse they are 2-8 ATS. They are also 0-4 ATS as the betting underdog during their last 10 games.
The Clippers on the other hand are on a different trajectory coming into the playoffs. They have been dominating on the floor winning seven of their last 10 games however just covering four of those games. With the way this Clippers team has been playing together as a unit this team has been humming and it's hard to fade him at this point. Take the Clippers laying the points as they push forward toward the playoffs.
FINAL CAVALIERS-CLIPPERS PICK & PREDICTION: Los Angeles Clippers -3.5 (-110)
