College Football Best Bets: Odds & Predictions for September 5

Publish Date: Sep 05, 2026
Fact checked by: Matt Moreno
Key Points
  • Oregon held five of its eight home opponents to 13 points or fewer last season, including three to seven or fewer. The Ducks host Boise State tonight, and the total is more enticing than the point spread.
  • UCLA went just 4-8 ATS last season and failed to cover both times it was favored by at least 2.5 points, while the Golden Bears went 4-3 ATS as underdogs of 2.5 or more. The former Pac-12 rivals meet in Berkeley tonight.
  • The UNLV Rebels have covered six of their last 10 meetings with the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. The two meet in Honolulu tonight.

Saturday’s college football schedule is packed with marquee matchups, highlighted by Clemson's road trip to LSU and Baylor's neutral-site showdown with Auburn. Those games feature nationally recognized programs, elite athletes and plenty of storylines, so they are likely to attract the majority of the public’s attention and betting volume. However, the most appealing opportunities aren't always in the games with the biggest television audiences or the most recognizable names.

In many cases, the best value comes from identifying how a matchup is likely to unfold rather than simply choosing the team that appears stronger on paper. Factors such as offensive efficiency, defensive tendencies, expected tempo, situational motivation, travel demands and the ability to create explosive plays can all influence the final result. A popular team may still be overvalued by the market, while a less-heralded program may offer better odds and a clearer path to success.

College Football Best Bets For Saturday

After reviewing the entire slate, three wagers stood out above the rest. The card includes one Total that is supported by the matchup’s statistical profile and projected pace, one live Moneyline Underdog with the ingredients necessary to pull off an outright upset and one Road Favorite that appears capable of handling the pressure of a hostile environment while still covering the spread. Each selection offers a distinct betting angle, but all three follow the same principle: finding value before the market fully accounts for the matchup.

Boise State-Oregon UNDER 51.5 points (-115, DraftKings)

Oregon possesses the talent to control this matchup from the opening kickoff, but clearing a total of 51.5 would likely require Boise State to contribute multiple touchdowns — or force the Ducks to score well into the 40s. Neither scenario represents the most probable game script.

Boise State enters its first Pac-12 season after a 9-5 campaign, but the Broncos face a substantial talent and depth disadvantage against the nation’s No. 2 team. Their clearest path is a run-heavy approach after averaging 188.4 rushing yards per game last season. Sustaining long drives, avoiding obvious passing downs and limiting Oregon’s short fields should reduce possessions and keep the clock moving.

That approach also matches Boise State’s recent totals profile, as eight of its 14 games finished Under last season. Quarterback Maddux Madsen returns after passing for 2,334 yards and 18 touchdowns, but the Broncos must replace key receivers and rebuild much of the offensive line. Against Oregon’s speed, those changes should limit explosive plays and make third-down conversions difficult.

Big Lead Production

Oregon held five of its eight home opponents to 13 points or fewer last season, including three to seven or fewer. If the Ducks establish a multi-score lead, Dan Lanning can protect his starters — highlighted by Heisman Trophy contender Dante Moore — and lean on the running game. With Boise State carrying a market-implied team total of only 14 points, even a commanding 38-10 or 41-10 Oregon victory would remain Under.

The early market movement strengthens the Under case, with the total falling from 52.5 to 51.5 at several sportsbooks. That adjustment suggests sharp resistance to the assumption that an Oregon blowout automatically becomes a high-scoring game. The Ducks are being asked to approach 38 points despite carrying an average implied total of only 34.3 last season.

California Moneyline vs. UCLA (+114, DraftKings)

Cal is the underdog at the current price, but I believe the Golden Bears should be a small home favorite.

Quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele is the biggest reason. As a true freshman, he completed 316 of 492 passes for 3,454 yards, 18 touchdowns and nine interceptions — finishing behind only Jared Goff in Cal freshman passing yards and touchdowns. He now works with a roster fortified by a transfer class rated among the nation’s top 15, while new coach Tosh Lupoi’s defensive background should strengthen an increasingly athletic unit.

UCLA has considerable upside with quarterback Nico Iamaleava, but the Bruins are coming off a 3-9 season and are beginning the Bob Chesney era with major schematic and personnel changes. Iamaleava completed 64.4% of his passes but averaged only 175.3 passing yards per game, throwing 13 touchdowns against seven interceptions. His 123.5 passer rating finished well below the FBS average, and he must demonstrate greater accuracy and consistency before UCLA deserves to be trusted as a road favorite.

The betting trends reinforce Cal’s value. UCLA went just 4-8 ATS last season and failed to cover both times it was favored by at least 2.5 points, while the Golden Bears went 4-3 ATS as underdogs of 2.5 or more. The underdog has also covered seven of the last eight meetings in this rivalry, strengthening the argument that Cal is mispriced at home.

UNLV -3 at Hawaii (-112, DraftKings)

UNLV’s 27-21 loss to Memphis was disappointing, but Jackson Arnold’s performance provided considerably more encouragement than the final score suggests. Arnold completed 25 of 37 passes for 291 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions while adding 54 rushing yards and another score. The Rebels led at halftime and produced 345 yards through Arnold alone despite allowing six sacks and converting only 3 of 15 third downs.

Those protection problems should be less damaging against a Hawaii defense that generated little pressure against an injury-depleted Stanford offensive line. The Cardinal still accumulated 483 yards, averaged 6.8 yards per play and 9.1 yards per pass attempt in a 37-27 victory. UNLV can attack the same weaknesses with Arnold’s vertical passing, mobility and Jai’Den Thomas’ rushing ability.

Rebel Rousers

Hawaii’s offensive imbalance is equally concerning. The Rainbow Warriors managed only 46 rushing yards at 2.1 per carry, forcing quarterback Micah Alejado to attempt 52 passes. That predictability should allow UNLV to pressure Alejado without consistently sacrificing an extra defender in coverage.

The Rebels have also covered six of their last 10 meetings with Hawaii. The Honolulu trip creates risk, but UNLV faced the stronger Week 0 opponent and has the more correctable problems. Improvement in protection and third-down execution should be enough to turn a competitive opener into a road victory.
