2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Best Bets (Sept. 6): Italy vs. USA Odds & Predictions

Key Points
  • Team USA returns to action in Group D play against Italy. The Americans are whopping -30.5 favorites, while the total is 154.5 points.
  • USA opened the event with a 94-61 win over China, while the Italians scored a 63-54 victory over Czechia.
  • Team USA defeated Italy 93-59 during March qualifying, a 34-point margin. In a probable blowout, coach Kara Lawson will likely distribute minutes throughout her young roster rather than extending starters simply to build the margin.

Team USA and Italy enter Sunday's Group D showdown with identical 1-0 records, but their 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup openers produced dramatically different paths to victory and a compelling set of questions for bettors.

The Americans immediately justified their status as the tournament favorite, overwhelming fourth-ranked China 94-61 with elite depth, defensive pressure and unselfish offense. Team USA recorded 26 assists, shot 37.5% from 3-point range and placed three players — Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers and Rhyne Howard — with 14 points apiece. Clark was particularly impressive in her World Cup debut, pairing those 14 points with 11 assists and zero turnovers as the Americans steadily transformed a competitive matchup into a 33-point rout.

Italy’s 63-54 victory over Czechia was far less explosive but equally important. The Italians survived a physical, low-scoring battle despite shooting below 40% from the field and making only five 3-pointers. Golden State Valkyries forward Cecilia Zandalasini carried the offense with 19 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Matilde Villa added 14 points. Italy also controlled the glass well enough to prevent Czechia from generating the second-chance opportunities needed to complete a comeback.

Is It Worth It?

That contrast establishes the primary handicapping debate. Can Italy’s deliberate pace, rebounding and half-court defense keep the game inside a substantial point spread, or will Team USA’s speed, depth and relentless transition attack eventually produce another runaway victory?

The total presents an equally intriguing decision. Italy showed it can drag an opponent into a defensive struggle, but controlling the tempo against Clark and an American roster that can create offense at every position will be considerably harder. Sunday’s matchup should reveal whether Italy is a legitimate Group D challenger, or simply Team USA’s next obstacle on another championship march.

FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup Best Bets and Top Props for Sunday

Laying 30.5 points with Team USA is tempting after the Americans dismantled China 94-61, but the number leaves almost no margin for a merely comfortable victory. USA must win by at least 31, meaning a 25- or 30-point blowout still produces a losing ticket.

Italy is also better equipped to shorten the game than China was. The Italians defeated Czechia 63-54 while collecting 42 rebounds and holding their opponent to 38% shooting. Their deliberate half-court approach consumes clock, limits possessions and reduces the number of opportunities Team USA has to separate. Italy also owns an experienced primary scorer in Cecilia Zandalasini, who produced 19 points in the opener, with Matilde Villa adding 14. Even if the outcome is decided early, that tandem is capable of scoring enough late points to threaten a backdoor cover.

Recent evidence also shows 30.5 is extremely efficient. Team USA defeated Italy 93-59 during March qualifying, a 34-point margin. The Americans would have covered this number, but by only 3.5 points. In a probable blowout, coach Kara Lawson can distribute minutes throughout her young roster rather than extending starters simply to build the margin.

Little To No Value

The total is equally dangerous because the two likely game scripts point in opposite directions. Italy wants a possession-by-possession struggle similar to its 117-point opener, favoring the Under. Team USA wants turnovers, transition opportunities and early offense after recording 26 assists with only eight turnovers against China, favoring the Over.

Italy also shot only 20.8% from three against Czechia, creating positive-regression potential, while a large American lead could produce either a fourth-quarter scoring exhibition or a complete offensive slowdown. With the spread requiring near-total domination and the total hinging on which team dictates tempo, both markets are probably better passed than forced.

Italy Under 62.5 (-120)

Italy scored only 63 points against Czechia, a considerably less talented defensive opponent, while shooting 40% overall, 20.8% from 3-point range and committing 16 turnovers. Now the Italians face an American defense that can apply pressure at every position and turn mistakes into empty possessions.

Team USA limited fourth-ranked China to 61 points in its opener despite China receiving 22 free-throw attempts and possessing exceptional interior size. The Americans forced difficult initiations, controlled the defensive glass, and committed only eight turnovers, preventing China from generating easy transition opportunities.

The matchup history is also valuable: USA held Italy to 59 points in a 93-59 qualifying victory in March. Italy depends heavily on Cecilia Zandalasini and Matilde Villa, who combined for 33 of its 63 points against Czechia. If the Americans contain one of those two scorers, Italy lacks enough secondary creation to compensate.

Paige Bueckers 2+ 3-Pointers (+146)

Paige Bueckers made only one 3-pointer against China, but she still finished with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting in just over 20 minutes. More importantly, she scored all 14 after halftime and remained aggressive deep into the fourth quarter, demonstrating that a large lead should not eliminate her opportunities.

Italy’s priority should be protecting the paint and preventing Team USA from dominating through Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier and Aliyah Boston. That should produce clean perimeter looks for American guards, particularly when Caitlin Clark initiates the second unit offense. Clark recorded 11 assists without a turnover against China, and her ability to draw multiple defenders gives Bueckers considerable catch-and-shoot potential.

USA shot 52% from beyond the arc when it defeated Italy during qualifying, while Bueckers scored 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting. At +146, the price implies only about a 41% probability. Two makes are attainable with five or six attempts, making this an attractive plus-money play despite some rotation risk.

Angel Reese 8+ Points (+142)

Angel Reese scored only five points against China, but that matchup forced her to battle 7-foot-3 Zhang Ziyu and one of the tournament’s biggest frontcourts. Italy presents a far more favorable physical assignment, allowing Reese to operate more efficiently as a rim runner, offensive rebounder and transition finisher. The Atlanta Dream All-Star scored only five against Italy during March qualifying, but her role is more secure now following the changes to the American frontcourt.

Reese collected nine rebounds in only 17 minutes during the opener, an elite rate of 19.1 boards per 36 minutes. She also produced five points despite receiving few designed touches. Against a smaller Italian frontcourt, some of those rebounds should become putbacks, while Team USA’s disruptive defense can create open-floor opportunities before Italy establishes its half-court coverage. Reese does not need meaningful usage to reach eight points; three finishes and two free throws are enough to cash the prop.

Italy allowed only 55.2 points per game during qualifying, but Team USA converted 21 two-point baskets in its 93-59 victory over the Italians. The expected blowout here should help Reese, rather than hurt. All 12 Americans scored against China, with the reserves producing 61 of Team USA’s 94 points. That distribution suggests Lawson will continue trusting her second unit while managing Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier during a condensed tournament schedule. At +142, an implied probability of approximately 41%, eight points is an attainable target supported by her rebounding activity, improved matchup and likely second-half minutes.
