NBA Pick of the Day: Pacers (+6 at -110) at Rockets

The Rockets, per usual, can score. But also per usual, the Rockets give up oodles of points. So far, the back court has been poor at converting the three-point shot, and that means Houston is often reliant on getting the ball into the paint. That may be tough against the Pacers, who have speed on their side.

We like the six points the Pacers are getting from Fliff odds makers on the road.

Magic at Clippers (+110)

We can see why Fliff lists the Orlando Magic (9-6) as road favorites. We just don’t agree, because the Clippers (8-7) are a pesky team at home in their spanking brand new arena.

Los Angeles is ninth in the NBA in three-point shooting, and eighth in rebounds. They usually grind the game down to a physical matchup late, preferring to get a mismatch on the perimeter if they can. The Clippers have won their last five at home, including impressive victories over Golden State and San Antonio.

Illinois Fighting Illini (+8.5 at -125) at Alabama Crimson Tide

We’re tempted to take Illinois to win on the moneyline at +265, but we’ll accept the points and back the Illini here in a non-conference road game.

Illinois is easy to write off

They lost four starters from the team that advanced to the Elite Eight last March. When we saw the Illini in that tournament, they were being blown away by eventual national champion Connecticut. But the names on the back of the uniform may have changed, but Illinois (3-0 and winning by an average of 29.6 points) is still formidable.

But more than that, we think No. 8 Alabama (3-1, with a loss to Purdue) has yet to prove they belong among the inner-circle elite teams in college basketball. They struggled to close out McNeese State and Arkansas State.

Both games were victories, but the Tide didn’t show the defensive moxie we think a top SEC team should have in the second half. In Illinois, Alabama is facing a roster that can hoist and make the three at a much higher rate than the Crimson can.
