NBA Pick of the Day: Lakers and Sixers

For those of you under the age of 30: there was a time when the 76ers and Lakers were mortal enemies. Three times between 1980 and 1983, these two franchises duked it out in the NBA Finals. Those were the days of Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Julius Erving, and Moses Malone.

On Friday, the Lakers (4-4) will host the Sixers (1-6), who are off to a sluggish start to the NBA season. But, despite LA being listed as a favorite, we like the underdog Sixers, and we tell you why next.

Philadelphia (+195 on Moneyline) at LA Lakers

This would typically be a clash between LeBron James and Joel Embiid. But the latter, the league MVP just two seasons ago, will not play on Friday. That’s because the Philly superstar is serving a suspension.

Still, we fall on the side of the Sixers not just covering the 9.5 point spread: we expect them to garner a well-fought road victory. That’s because the Lakers best player, Anthony Davis, is hobbled by a foot injury that kept him out of LA’s most recent game.

LA is 3-0 at home, but those wins came nearly two weeks ago, and LeBron’s team just suffered a woeful 1-4 road trip. The Lakers are better represented by their last five games than the three that opened the season with a healthy, chipper Davis.

On Friday, we expect the Sixers to find enough offense from Tyrese Maxey and not-yet-over-the-hill Paul George, who continues his homecoming tour of southern California.

It’s a battle of blue bloods as the Tar Heels and Jayhawks take their esteemed pedigrees to the hardwood on Friday.

This Friday, North Carolina enters this matchup as the No. 9 team in the country. The Jayhawks are ranked No. 1 in college basketball. But we’re very early in the season, and a long, winding road is ahead before we get to the Final Four in San Antonio next March.
