LeBron James Leaving Lakers: Next Team Odds, Predictions & Best Bets

On Tuesday morning, LeBron James stunned the basketball world. James won't retire but will leave the Los Angeles Lakers. Per Shams Charania, he will play the 2026-27 NBA season elsewhere. Now that the Lakers are out of the picture, let's take a look at LeBron's next team betting odds and my predictions on who will sign him.

NBA free agency is here, and we've already seen superstars including Giannis Antetokounmpo, LaMelo Ball, Ja Morant, and Julius Randle find new homes. LeBron James will officially hit the market as a free agent and will also be searching for a new home.

James, 41, spent the past eight seasons with the Lakers. During his tenure, James has been named an NBA Champion, Finals MVP, and led the Lakers as NBA Cup champions in 2023. In a Laker uniform, LeBron passed former Laker great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA's all-time scoring leader and passed 40,000 career points.

Despite the Lakers acquiring Luka Dončić, James and Los Angeles were unable to win another NBA Championship. When it's all said and done, we can settle the GOAT debate between LeBron James and Michael Jordan. In 23 NBA seasons, James has spent time with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Los Angeles Lakers. In 1622 regular-season games, he's averaged 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, 7.4 assists, and 1.5 steals, while shooting 50.7% from the field and 34.8% from beyond the arc.

LeBron James Is Leaving the Los Angeles Lakers

LeBron is widely regarded as one of the most durable players in NBA history and has never missed a season due to injury or illness. He played just 60 games in 2025-26 after back-to-back 71 and 70-game seasons from 2023-25.

Throughout his illustrious career, LeBron James is a 22-time NBA All-Star, four-time NBA champion, four-time MVP, four-time NBA Finals MVP, 21-time All-NBA, three-time All-Star MVP, 2007-08 NBA Scoring Champion, six-time All-Defensive Team, a member of the NBA 75th Anniversary team, and much more.

While LeBron is fighting father time, he still remains highly productive. He averaged 33.2 minutes per game for the Lakers last season, in addition to 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists. His scoring has dropped off some, but he has plenty left in the tank regardless of how many years are ahead of him in the NBA.

There have been rumors swirling of James joining Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors. They are currently the overwhelming favorite (-500) to sign James, followed by the Cavaliers (+300), Heat (+1000), Spurs (+2000), and Knicks (+3000).

Here are LeBron James next team odds, courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook. I will break down the favorite, sleeper picks, and my best prediction of who James will play for next season.

The Favorites

Golden State Warriors (-500)

The LeBron James to the Warriors rumors have been swirling for a while now. Golden State is led by the greatest sharpshooter of all time, Steph Curry, and has led as a dynasty with four NBA championships from 2014 to 2021. Head Coach Steve Kerr still leads the team, and Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson are long gone.

According to Shams Charania, Draymond Green declined a $27.7 million player option to become a free agent. This is a tactic to pursue both big man Anthony Davis and LeBron James.

The Warriors have never been shy of signing superstars and are seeking their first championship since the 2021-22 season. They missed the playoffs in two of the last three years and could certainly use a household name such as James. Plus, Curry and James have played together in previous Olympic and All-Star games.

The only way I could see LeBron signing with the Warriors is if Green returns and takes less money. The likelihood of landing Davis seems less now that Al Horford and Kristaps Porzingis are returning to the team.

A lineup consisting of Curry, Brandin Podziemski, LeBron James, Draymond Green, and Kristaps Porzingis seems lethal to me. The Warriors recently drafted Yaxel Lendeborg, who would add immediate depth. The only question that remains is health. Golden State could also look to trade Jimmy Butler, who's coming off an ACL tear.

Bottom line, the Warriors are fresh off a disappointing 37-45 last season, and they ranked No. 19 in offensive rating (113.8) and No. 16 in defensive rating (114.4). James and Curry, if healthy, could form one of the most lethal duos in the NBA as LeBron could average 20+ points a night and add two-way stardom that would fill the Chase Center every night.

• I would not recommend betting on this, as the odds are inflated at -500. 

Cleveland Cavaliers (+300)

We can’t entirely close the door on LeBron returning to the Cleveland Cavaliers, which is the first team he was drafted by in 2003. LeBron already had two stints with the Cavaliers and notably brought a championship to the city in 2016 with Kyrie Irving. It’s a real possibility that he returns. The Cavaliers had a historic season two years ago and have fallen short despite being a solid regular-season team.

Cleveland even went as far as acquiring James Harden for Darius Garland, and still couldn’t advance to the NBA Finals with Harden and Donovan Mitchell at the helm.

Again, James would have familiarity with the city in the franchise, and this is a Cavaliers team that finished 52-30 and lost in the Eastern Conference Finals last year against the Knicks.

As far as fit goes, LeBron would play alongside Harden, who is currently trying to restructure his contract on a multi-year deal with the Cavaliers. In addition, Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Jared Allen, and James would be electric.

The question remains: how would they accommodate James financially and fit him into a loaded Cavaliers roster? James would be the perfect piece for the Cavaliers team that ranked  No.  6 in offensive rating (118.3) and No. 15 in defensive rating (114.1).

• This would be the perfect homecoming for LeBron James, and I do believe the Cavaliers are a piece or two away from advancing to the NBA Finals. Either James Harden would have to walk or take a serious pay cut. It’s hard to say how this would work out financially. 

Sleeper Team

Miami Heat (+1000)

Heat fans may be optimistic, as it has been 16 years since LeBron James announced "The Decision" to head to South Beach and play for the Heat.

This is a sleeper option, but it's one that makes sense. The Heat recently acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo to pair with Bam Adebayo.

Since free agency started, Andrew Wiggins has re-signed with the Miami Heat. Can you imagine LeBron James heading back to Miami and teaming up with both Antetokounmpo and Wiggins? This is an organization with which LeBron won two NBA championships.

Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade may be long gone and retired, but it’s clear that Miami is making a championship push. If LeBron signs with the Heat, it’s most likely the case that Norman Powell will be on the way out.

There are also several question marks I have, including depth and health, just like any other scenario. Adebayo, Antetokounmpo, Wiggins, James, and Davion Mitchell would certainly make a lethal starting five. Unless Golden State signs some more free agents, I truly feel this is LeBron’s best chance to win another championship.

The Heat may have missed out on the playoffs last year, but they still finished 41-39. Not to mention, Miami made the playoffs for six straight seasons from 2019 to 2024, including a Finals appearance in 2023 against the Denver Nuggets.

• Given their past roster, the Heat ranked No. 12 in offensive rating (115.8) and No. 14 in defensive rating (113.6). Can you imagine how explosive this offense could be with a big three? Overall, LeBron James has familiarity with the franchise and already has played under head coach Erik Spoelstra. I think this is a better fit for him, and he will have a complementary role surrounded by superstars. I’ll take the Heat all day for +1000 odds

My Prediction

Golden State Warriors (-500)

I don’t want to be the most obvious person, but I do believe the Golden State Warriors will end up signing LeBron James at -500 odds. Bronny James now has a fully guaranteed contract, and it would make sense that LeBron would want to remain in the California area near his family.

From a basketball fit, Draymond Green would definitely have to take a pay cut so the Warriors can sign James, and he’s always expressed his desire to play alongside Steph Curry. James would join a fully loaded Warriors team that may or may not get Butler back if they don't trade him.

James and the Warriors would ultimately be a competitive team, but it would also be one of the oldest teams in the NBA. So again, health is a factor. If LeBron can take less money, there’s absolutely a path for him to become a Warrior. Curry and LeBron in the lineup would feed families. I truly can’t see him leaving California.
