Two teams with a good chance to represent their conference in the next Super Bowl will compete in the first Monday Night Football game of the 2026 season.
The Kansas City Chiefs host the Denver Broncos tonight at 8:15 PM ET on ABC Sports and ESPN. The Chiefs are slight favorites, making this a rare game with Denver as a road underdog.

Start with the Chiefs, because well...they're the Chiefs. The team welcomes back Patrick Mahomes coming off his first major injury. Word is that the soon-to-be 31-year old quarterback is healthy.
"I feel as strong as I ever have," Mahomes told reporters last weekend, coming off a left knee ACL and LCL tears.
Fact is, the Chiefs are older and have not done much to help get more athletic on defense, especially the secondary. On offense, Mahomes will be able to turn and hand the football to free agent signee Kenneth Walker III. But after Walker, the RB well runs very dry. Does that mean the Chiefs will be relying on an again and post-injury Mahomes to move the chains with his arm and feet? The history of the NFL is littered with QBs over the age of 30 who fell dramatically in production, especially small quarterbacks.
The Broncos are a team I would be suspicious of across the entire season. In 2025, Denver won 11 one-score games, tying an NFL record. The other two teams that posted 11 one-score victories failed to make the NFL Playoffs the following season.
However, the Broncos on the road as a dog are a good play in Week 1, when teams are usually rusty and defensive line play can decide a final score. I'd bet on the Broncos to beat the spread, and not touch the To Win odds market.
Denver is 4-2 ATS as a road underdog the last two seasons.
In sweepstakes sportsbook terms, you may also see this as "Bet 1.09 units to win 1 unit."
Increasingly, NFL teams are choosing to keep their starters on the sidelines during the preseason. The assets are too valuable to risk injury. A result of that decision is rusty play in Week 1, especially on the defensive line and secondary, where players have had little experience hitting and playing at the fast pace of an actual NFL game.
In Week 1's first 15 games through Sunday night, the average total score is 50.0 points, which would break the record set almost 15 years ago (49.4 PPG in 2012). This trend has been shown over the last few years: offenses are ahead of defense when the NFL season begins. That makes sense: much of defense is reacting. In Week 1, the offense knows the plan, while the defense is on its heels.
The Chiefs and Broncos were both good defensive teams in 2025. But year-to-year performance on the score prevention side is more unpredictable than offense. We simply don't know much about a defense until it plays a few games in the regular season.
I'm sticking with the trends in Week 1 and going for the OVER for one of my MNF Best Bets.
A scary thought for AFC teams who have to compete with the once-mighty Chiefs is this: Kenneth Walker III has yet to have his big season. The 25-year old running back gained fame for his impressive performance in the last Super Bowl for the Seahawks. But his career-best in yards is still 1,050 in his rookie season.
Given that Walker is entering his prime years as an NFL RB, and he's joined a team that has a fantastic, veteran offensive line, it's smart to assume he could have a monster season.
The Broncos were second in the NFL in defending the run in 2025. The Chiefs were 25th in rushing yards. Seems like a simple idea: Denver's run D is better than KC's running game.
But, Walker is the wild card. We're seeing pass attempts down the first week of the NFL (2.4 fewer attempts through 15 games). This is why I like Walker to scamper for good yardage against Denver.
Reports of the demise of Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are greatly exaggerated. I expect the still-sneaky quick Mahomes will avoid danger, and guide his Chiefs to a narrow win at home. But I am not taking a bet on this result.
