Underdogs and undermanned in all sorts, the Chicago Bulls look to snap a three-game losing skid when they host Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves this Thursday at the United Center.
Chicago dropped its third consecutive game after falling to Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday while Minnesota heads into this matchup fresh off a 114-93 demolition of the Charlotte Hornets.
Will the Bulls overcome the odds and continue its mastery over the Timberwolves or will Edwards and the rest of Minnesota have something to say about their current performance against Chicago? That remains to be seen but as of press time here’s how both teams look heading into this pivotal matchup.
Wins have been hard to come by for the Chicago Bulls but they return home this Thursday and that could help them cover the spread against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Although they have started the season just winning three of their first eight assignments, the Bulls are actually pretty decent when bookmakers have them as underdogs.
High-flier Zach LaVine who leads the Bulls in scoring at 22.7 points per game was unavailable against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday and remains questionable heading into this game.
Should LaVine suit up, backing Chicago to cover the spread at these current odds is a great play here but in an event that he doesn’t the team still has plenty of offensive weapons with one being versatile center Nikola Vucevic.
A few things Chicago has to improve against the Timberwolves is taking good care of the ball and their three-point shooting percentage. Against the Mavericks, the Bulls not only shot a dismal 28.6% from three but also turned the ball over 22 times.
This simply just won’t cut it against a feisty Timberwolves squad who looks for every opportunity to convert turnovers into easy baskets.
All things considered, should the Bulls dominate the boards like they did against the Mavericks and improve their shooting percentages, not to mention cut their turnovers, they should have a better chance of covering the spread than the odds suggest.
The Minnesota Timberwolves rebounded from an underwhelming performance against the San Antonio Spurs with a dominant 114-93 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Monday thanks to a season-high performance from Naz Reid.
With the Timberwolves shooters online from rainbow country, there could be potential value towards backing the road team to cover the -7 spread at these current odds.
However, Minnesota will need forward Julius Randle to step up and shoulder much of the offensive load early on with the Chicago Bulls likely pressing and closing in on their shooters.
The 29-year old Randle who has been a revelation since joining the Timberwolves, racking up five consecutive 20-point games, was only held to 13 points against the Hornets.
Should the Timberwolves get similar offensive production from Edwards and their bench and Randle bounces back from a lackluster game against Charlotte, leaning towards Minnesota to cover against a short-handed Bulls team should be a no-brainer.
Had the Chicago Bulls been healthy here, they would’ve been able to give the Minnesota Timberwolves a run for their money. Considering the injury struggles in the Windy City and the talent level of their opponents, it’s hard to pick against Timberwolves.
With guards Anthony Edwards and Mike Conley leading the backcourt and forward Julius Randle and center Rudy Gobert manning the inside duties, the Timberwolves should have enough gas in the tank to cover the spread and record its second consecutive win.
