Defending NBA Cup champions Los Angeles Lakers look to start their title-retention bid on a strong note as they take on the battle-tested San Antonio Spurs this Friday at the AT&T Center.
The Lakers won the inaugural tournament last year after it dismantled the Indiana Pacers thanks to a historic 41-point-20-rebound game from Anthony Davis while the Spurs were unable to make it past the group stages after losing all four of its games.
Los Angeles won the season series last year but franchise superstar Victor Wembanyama has grown before our very eyes as evident with his performance against the Wizards.
Will Wembanyama’s historic performance carry over or will LeBron James and the Lakers draw first blood in their four-game season series?
With plenty of questions unanswered, let’s look at the current state of the Spurs and the Lakers as we head into this explosive Western Conference showdown.
Held to just 12 points against the Portland Trail Blazers, franchise superstar Victor Wembanyama has rebounded in style, putting up big numbers in the past three but none bigger than what he did on Wednesday night.
With the Los Angeles Lakers coming into town next, expect Wembanyama to continue putting up big numbers, especially since he did that last season.
Although it did not translate to a victory, the Spurs are a completely different team from last year with Wembanyama seemingly settling in to the hustle and bustle of the league and Chris Paul dictating the offensive tempo.
Paul was only limited to nine points against the Wizards but he was instrumental at dictating the Spurs’ offense and defense, finishing with 11 assists and three steals.
Besides Paul’s impressive play, the Spurs have been also taking good care of the ball while playing hard-knows defense in the current stretch.
Should Wembanyama deliver his usual numbers and the Spurs continue to play their brand defense, backing them to cover and potentially win outright is a good play here, especially since they are taking on a Lakers squad that has only won once in the road this season.
After losing two of their first three games this month, the Los Angeles Lakers have scored three successive victories, including a 128-123 comeback victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night.
Down 96-91 heading into the fourth, the Lakers went on a 37-27 scoring barrage to turn back the Grizzlies and keep their immaculate record at home intact.
Expect the Lakers to rely on James again as they take on a red-hot San Antonio Spurs team next to begin a two-game road trip.
However, Los Angeles has to get their reserves going here to increase their chances of covering the -2.5 spread.
The Lakers will also need their three-point attempts to hit the mark, especially with the Spurs having plenty of offensive weapons from different areas of the floor.
Fortunately, Los Angeles has been shooting way above their average from downtown in the past three games, making 42.3 of their shots.
All things considered, there could be value towards backing the road team to cover the spread if you are looking for a betting angle on the favorite.
This is one of those games you’d want to pass on betting and just enjoy, considering the unpredictability of both teams. However, if I had to bet, placing some action on the over market total is worth some c-notes. It is worth noting that the over hit in five of their previous six matchups.
